The Too Much TV Roundup- 12/18/23

I’m happy for Fred Armisen, and I’m happy for anyone who actually enjoyed his portrayal of Uncle Fester. He was my least favorite casting choice in the series. I would much rather have watched a prequel series that showed the times Gomez and Mortica spent there as young folk. But the world needs more Fester.

1) bodies (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

My perpetual problem with this show will be the massive cast and the time jumps. there are too many people for me to follow or care about, and I’m also trying to unravel a really complex and interesting mystery. A series that was planning to run multiple seasons would have spaced out the character introductions and the time we spend with them, but as a limited series, it crams them all in.

Episode Grade: B

2) Billions (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description? Yes

Narrated By Paula Hoffman

Status: Final Season

Chuck and Axe make a deal. John Malkovich returns. Prince hears tough feedback from his team at prince capital, and Chuck also has to micromanage his father.

Episode Grade: A

3) Our Flag Means Death (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Narrated By: Roy Samuelson? (I gotta get these streamers to let me watch credits)

Status: Unknown

Steve is getting renown among the pirates after making his first kill, but Ed really is in a very different place, and not sure he wants to be a pirate anymore. Despite all the silly things that happened in this story, the dramatic weight between those two was given a moment. I appreciated that.

Episode Grade: A

4) Wolf Like Me (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

As we near the end of the season, life starts becoming way more difficult. The murders from Season 1 are being investigated, and Emma thinks telling her Aunt the truth will make things better, but it makes things worse. Side note: Really hate the aunt this episode.

Episode Grade: A-

5) Black Cake (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: yes

Narrated By: Andrew Thatcher?

Status: Limited?

After Scotland definitely didn’t work out, our past takes us back to the island, where her prospects of seeing and getting to spend time with the only person she actually loves is there. Meanwhile, in the present, someone has a boyfriend/husband they needed to drop *yesterday*.

Episode Grade: B+

6) First Wives Club (BET Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I’m in striking distance of finishing this on BET Plus before I eventually cancel my subscription in January. Not only is the selection odd, but it also has a lot of undescribed content. I did like this show, but the service is 90% shows produced by Tyler Perry, TV movies you’ve never heard of, and more Tyler Perry movies. Sadly, Black Entertainment doesn’t mean trying to track down and curate the exceptional film work done by black directors like Spike Lee and Gina Prince Blythewood, and films about the African American experience, whether from the 70’s blaxploitation era like Shaft or Foxy Brown, dramas like Sounder or The Color Purple, icons like Malcolm X or Selma, romantic touchstones like The Best Man or Love and Basketball, and comedies like Friday and Sorry To Bother You are just vacant. I don’t know what the concept here is, but there is tremendous work out there that is not represented on this service. Even the potential library of classic TV series seems shockingly limited, despite the numerous sitcoms and dramas over the years aimed at black audiences.

Episode Grade: B

7) Saturday Night Live (Peacock)

English Audio description?: No

Status: Renewed

Kate McKinnon showed up and played a lot of new characters, and wasn’t asked to just run through her greatest hits. There were also several cameos this episode, but nothing really beat the segment in Weekend Update where Colin and Michael write jokes for each other. Always a good gag.

Episode Grade: B

8) Last Week Tonight (MAX)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Renewed

Let’s work in future seasons on getting audio description on right away. While this show tapes close to its air date, it does not air live. This should be attainable, since we do have live audio description. However, watching John Oliver rip into Rudy and then Elon was a nice Christmas gift.
