The Small Screen Diaries- 01/13/24

The fourth episode of Squid Game: The Challenge (Netflix) just feels like filler. The audio description team, with Sri Gordon as narrator, is still doing solid work, but this episode was just a lot of dumb challenges. The only interesting one was having them vote off three people. That and the way they handled it was fine, and since we ended on a solid number, with 70 contestants remaining, it felt like that was where we needed to go. While I don’t know the results of the Jack In the Box game, it’s not everyone competing, and the fact that someone could be eliminated from it is dumb. You already did the phone challenge. This is not why people watch Squid Game.

Lawman (Paramount Plus) continues audio description excellence with the Media Access Group (and likely Andrew Thatcher), as Bass has people trying to claim a bounty on him. Then, he learns the true nature of who Mr. Sundown is. of course, this whole time, I don’t know if this Sundown guy is someone who ever existed, but regardless, what a name choice for a villain targeting black people. I cringe every time I hear “Mr Sundown” in this show.

Reacher (Amazon) was another fantastic episode as he and his crew got more information on New Age, and a better idea of what they are up against. There’s a focus on the cops in this that worries me someone might be corrupt, like Bruce McGill just played last season. Reacher’s final line in this episode is epic.

What If (Disney Plus) explored what if Iron Man was trapped in Mario Kart. Not really, but when I say this show goes up and down, I mean it. Despite the presence of Iron Man, Korg, Valkyrie, Gamora, and The Grandmaster, the only one I actually thought was voiced by the original actor for sure was Grandmaster. And the racing game thing just didn’t work for me. But that ending, I was here for it.
