Netflix has been on a bit of a roll with series renewals and cancellations lately, and today is no exception, thanks to the early renewal of The Hunting Wives for a third season. When a streaming service is comfortable with a show’s budget, and social media reactions consistently suggest that investing in its future is worthwhile, making an early renewal decision is smart. Yesterday, I talked about the renewal of one show and realized that I completely skipped over another renewal, which was Imperfect Women on Apple TV. This surprised me because it really isn’t a show that needs a second season, and it falls right in line with the ongoing trend of making me wonder why we even bother labeling things limited series anymore. I guess I’ll kick off today’s Small Screen Diaries with a little good news for fans of Tulsa King, as Paramount has renewed the Sylvester Stallone drama for a fifth season, despite the company still being in flux in the middle of a merger. Interestingly, the fifth season will apparently move the action to New York, which isn’t entirely surprising given the direction of the series, but does seem a little strange when your show is literally called Tulsa King. I was inordinately busy yesterday, so this is one of those shorter Small Screen Diaries kind of days. But I did kick things off by complaining to Crunchyroll about how, despite the latest patch, the iOS version of the app still oddly blocks people from being able to hear specifically English audio description. If you have English audio description set as your primary language, you hear nothing. Kicking off the Small Screen Diaries for the day, I can announce that Amazon is sticking with the totality of the Jack Reacher franchise, with Reacher being renewed for a sixth season while Season 5 is still in production. Its spinoff, Neagley, was also just renewed for a second season. I think the biggest, and really only relevant, TV news to kick this off today is the fact that Netflix has once again proven the term “limited series” means absolutely nothing. They have picked up The Beast in Me for a second season. Kicking off today, I continued with Furious, season one, episode two, which is available on Hulu and through Disney+ with Hulu, with audio description. This definitely is a winner. I can understand a bit more now as to why it has become a breakout hit. Lola Petticrew is still captivating here as this killer with a sympathetic angle, allowing you to follow her as a protagonist instead of purely as an antagonist. Never Forget. Yesterday, Netflix surprisingly axed Ransom canyon, which dipped over 40% from Season 1 to season 2. It is a recurring problem with streaming TV. The longer the wait, the bigger the drop. I suppose I should start this by admitting that I didn’t experience Avatar: Fire and Ash the way James Cameron probably intended. I didn’t see it on the biggest screen imaginable. Once again I’m running down the sixty shows on my broad watchlist. Joining the list this week, which was fairly slow for new shows, are The Sandman (Netflix), All Of Us Are Dead (Netflix), The Office (Peacock), Such Brave Girls (Hulu), Nautilus (AMC Plus), Dexter (Paramount Plus), and Prison Break (Netflix).
