Lift

Sometimes, i don’t mind seeing a film just a little bit after the flood of critics and online haters. It really gives me perspective. I always approach every movie as neutral as possible, but often, the crowd is right. Maybe not quite to the extremes. While I didn’t really care for either Meg 2 or The Expend4bles, I definitely saw worse last year. Lift was getting that kind of bad press, and I’m going to lightly disagree. It’s not worth fighting over, but in a rotten/fresh, thumbs down/up world, I’d recommend this over not recommending it.

Kevin Hart leads an all-star cast, complete with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jean Reno, and Jacob Batalan, among others. Basically, a really talented thief and his crew are hired to steal something from a very dangerous man, because only they have that particular set of skills. It’s Ocean’s Fast Five.

Some of the flak is that the movie doesn’t develop all the supporting cast. I’d argue that the Eleven of Danny Ocean’s titular group don’t all have the same screen time, or character development. What I will concede is this movie is utterly ridiculous, but I sometimes like a film that enjoys being utterly ridiculous and fun.Yeah, there’s a see through plane, among other things. This isn’t trying to win an Oscar, it is trying to entertain you. Director F. Gary Gray has managed to do that several times before, with different results, but he is a somewhat solid director in terms of creating a time waster.Lift has that dark cloud mainly because it is a straight to Netflix film, something it has little control over.

The team at Descriptive Video Works did a nice job with the description. The whole film is over the top, and the audio description manages to explain a lot of the baffling technology in the film as though it really exists, or the over the top action set pieces that could never happen.

It is one of those films that you can watch once, enjoy, pass the time, and move on. I’m not sure why everyone hated this so much. It is action fluff. I know we get spoiled with John Wick, but not everything can be John Wick. Some films can just be Lift. The greatest comparison I can give you is how I felt about The Italian Job remake. I saw it once, and had fun. I never needed to watch it again. It isn’t in my favorite films list, but I also wouldn’t try and stop someone from watching it. It is worth one viewing. Not every film needs to win Oscar’s.

  1. Billy Magnussen was great in his supporting role. Fun little movie that, like you said, helps pass the time with some light hearted entertainment
