A Thank You To Dianne Newman

Recently I was made aware that a lovely voice talent in the audio description community passed. Dianne Newman was prolific enough that I knew her name, and could remember it when mentioned on a project. Thanks to the work we’ve done at The ADNA (theadna.org), some of her credits are posted. I’m sure this isn’t all of her work. I’m fairly certain I heard her recently on a horror title, perhaps Bloat? Let’s stroll down memory lane.

Anne With An E (Netflix)- I never did get around to watching this, but I know this series has fans. hopefully, Dianne gave a memorable performance.

Better Call Saul (Netflix/AMC)- We were lucky to get the audio description for this on Netflix, and I remember being grateful that I could actually catch up with and be only a little behind audiences that watched this on cable. I waited for the streaming release, so I could get the audio description. I have watched the entire series, and though it ended a few years back, I remember the audio description fondly.

Breaking Bad (Netflix/AMC)- Is it weird that I couldn’t really get into Breaking Bad, but I watched all of Better Call Saul? This is always on my mind of things to tackle again at some point. I’ll remember she’s behind the madness of this series.

Dirty John (Netflix/USA)- I actually didn’t watch this with audio description. i had no way of knowing it would end up on Netflix, and I watched it without audio description on USA, and wasn’t interested enough to watch it a second time.

Disquiet (Film)- Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars in a horror film that I have not seen, but IMDb users do not seem to like.

Dragons Den- I don’t know which version she narrated. There are several titles listed on IMDb and none make immediate sense. this is likely a TV Show, but could be a video game. there are multiple TV shows called Dragon’s Den though.

el camino (Netflix)- I always felt that because I hadn’t finished Breaking Bad, I would either be lost, or unable to understand what happened in this movie spinoff.

Earth Abides (MGM Plus)- oh shit. i loved this. I really wanted it to be a series, that ran for multiple seasons, but it has a clear beginning and end. I remember thinking the audio description here was excellent. I think it was my first MGM Plus series I watched all the way through with audio description. I highly recommend this one.

Narcos (Netflix)- You know, I have always had this on a catch up list too. but it is just so damn hard to catch up on everything.

NiNoKuni (Netflix)- Apparently an anime on Netflix I’m just now learning about.

Rise Of Empires: Ottoman (Netflix)- A docuseries. I’m just now learning this exists.

Sex Education (Netflix)- another terrific series. Watched all the way through. I definitely remember the audio description being good, in terms of merging the sexual content, with the dramatic and comedic moments.

The Chef Show (Netflix)- I watched the movie, but not the series.

Uncut Gems (Film)- This Adam Sandler drama almost got him an Oscar nomination. The fast pace it keeps up with really gives the description a challenge, as this has a tendency to throw a lot at the writers. I’m sure she did well, it just has been a long time since I’ve seen this, and maybe I’ll rewatch it soon.

Van Helsing- Is this the 2004 film with Hugh Jackman or the series? I’ve seen the film with audio description, but I have not seen the SyFy series with audio description (if it exists).

When Calls The Heart (Hallmark)- Oh, I know this show has fans. I’m not one of them, but there are fans. I’m sure her work is appreciated.

She has definitely done more than this. Let me know what you remember, and I’ll add it. Also, make sure to submit her credits to the adna.org so her page can be complete and represent her work. Yers from now as people rewatch her films and shows, they will look for a representation of her credits and other projects, and I think we all know this list is incomplete.

  1. Dragon’s Den is probably the Canadian equivalent of Shark Tank.

Dianne narrated the AD for the series Van Helsing. The AD is available on Netflix in many territories but not the USA, even though the series itself can be streamed on Netflix in the USA.
