What is it?: unofficially based on the true story of Whitney Wolfe Herd who was instrumental in the creation of Tinder and Bumble, pushing dating apps onto your phone, and also fighting against a system controlled by men, which ultimately crushes her, leaving her to create Bumble.

What Works: lily James is good in this, certainly having more to do here than on Emily In Paris. She has a few scenes of dramatic weight, but mostly the film is flying at a rapid pace. in under two hours it needs to establish Whitney on her own, then have her pulled into her first group, which becomes tinder. Then, she has to fall out of that for reasons explored in the film, hit rock bottom, only to rise back up higher than before as the head of Bumble. Sometimes the film feels too fast, like it is Air, but overclocked.

The film is so dialogue heavy, there can be long breaks with no audio description. thre’s nowhere to slide it in. Luckily, the film itself flies by, and is entertaining enough to keep you hooked. It just clearly was never going to be an awards bait film, which is why it went to Hulu. I can’t see how this would have been marketed theatrically. Even if we didn’t have streaming debuts, the best this could have hoped for was a release pattern similar to shattered Glass, and possibly even less box office.

the supporting cast isn’t terribly memorable, aside from a fine accent from Steven’s. I did want the film to have a full stop serious moment to deal with the issues at tinder around the complaints of female users, but thiss film can’t stop won’t stop.

The Audio description: Deluxe did what they could, but this is far from a robust track. Like I said, this is a very wordy film, and there just aren’t a lot of moments for effusive description. the narrator was fine, and the mix was great.

Why you Might Like it: If you like these types of biopics, especially ones heavily influenced by Aaron Sorkin’s style of rapid fire talking, then you should be fine here.

Why you Might Not Like it: One reason that it is a little surface level is the pacing, and the other is that Whitney is still under NDA’s and couldn’t participate. So, if you feel like it doesn’t go deep enough, it probably didn’t.

Final thoughts: A perfect acceptable streaming debut with a charming lead performance. I forget, are we supposed to swipe left, or swipe right? Make the choice that’s right for you.
