Gen V- Murray and the gang still have to fully break out, which they do with the help of Sam who decides to finally join the squad. Then, we get some cameos from The Boys with Emmy Nominee Giancarlo Esposito swinging back in as the head of VOT, and he’s got his “granddaughter” with him. Murray needed to get more information, which is my only problem with this episode. Know your enemy, and she really doesn’t try and milk her new helper for all his knowledge. Kate thinks Murray can fix her, Anna Beth and Murray’s complicated relationship is complicated further by a big secret, and Cypher and Polarity have a showdown. A supe dies, but you won’t care. the audio description was solid as usual, and i even liked the name check of the books in the library. I only remember 1984, but the choices were perfect. I also totally misread Cypher, who details his master plans, and I really thought it was the other way around.
House Of Guinness- The fictional tale based on the rise of the famous brewery continues. This episode was mostly about aligning and taking sides, though you do see an Irish Catholic chased by Protestants, as if this show didn’t have enough going on. Now we’re tackling the battle between two different sects of Christianity, and the battle for religious superiority.
Platonic- the season finale. In case I don’t review, I enjoyed most of the season, though it had some mixed bag moments. the audio description was fine, but I’m not blown away. I do understand the comedy format leads to a lot more dialogue, which can sometimes limit description, and often the description has moments of greatness. For example, in this episode, we have the juxtaposition between what someone is writing, and what is actually happening.
Migrete- I enjoyed Patience over the summer, so now I’m in the mood to check out more dry British TV in hopes of finding a winner. The Gold turned out to be something I had already seen on Paramount Plus, and this is another detective procedural, but I have so many like this in my lineup right now… I wasn’t sure what the quirk was or the hook. I’m also not uniquely aware of any of the cast, so it is just a standard crime procedural with a detective at the center who will eventually solve a case. It could be interesting, but there are dozens of shows like this, and it didn’t do anything in the pilot to hook me in. If I was a junkie for this one specific genre, sure. But I’m not. The audio description was fine, and I’m pretty sure it was human. I’m fairly confident.
Ginny and Georgia- Georgia is miserable without her kids and she might finally be relatable. I started to warm up to her a bit, because she wasn’t a wrecking ball of chaos, and has been given some time to have introspection. Meanwhile, Ginny is being appropriately nasty to her dad, which is great. She points out that there were cameras around when he pulled his stunt, so doubling down on the embarrassment. And, she also tells him that Gil is an abuser. So, her little brother is now living with a man with a temper, which Zion wasn’t aware of, and thought Gil was a stand up guy. This episode ends with a predictable surprise for Ginny, given the season, the overall level of drama in this show, and the silly setup of how they get to this point.
the paper- I think this might be one of my favorite AD tracks ever. I can see it being polarizing for some, but it perfectly compliments the subject matter and organically feels like part of the show. Even the opening credits, where Dave describes how the paper is used, to clean up pee and line bird cages is exactly how we use newspaper. He’s had some great synergy on shows like Solar Opposites, but nothing quite like this level. I could be convinced that this AD was made simultaneously as an organic part of the production of the show, and not as a byproduct of an executive later on subcontracting and just happening to pick the right team. I’ve heard some of their choices. They’ve partnered with some truly awful AD teams at peacock. there had to be intentionality here so we didn’t get another Twisted Metal or The Traitors.
