The Small Screen Diaries: 12/11/25

Blind People Problems: losing something small, and having no clue which direction it even went. Somewhere in this room is the I key to my keyboard. In the meantime, I’m typing and hitting the hole where it used to be. Life truly is a grand adventure.

TV Shows Watched: Squid Game: The Challenge: S2E2 (Netflix) with audio description, I Love LA: S1E2 (HBO MAX) with audio description, SNL: Glen Powell (Peacock) with audio description, Matlock: S2E? (Paramount Plus)with audio description.

Squid Game: The challenge- I’m so far behind, this is the second episode. Someone already won this. Still, i needed to know whether or not that guy’s daughter won, and the other shenanigans. Randomly selecting players to vote out isn’t a game or a skill. I feel this both with the series and the reality show. If you made it so multiple people could split the final prize, it might make sense because of alliances. But of course, they just vote to eliminate. Less competition. The AD here is still as good as it can be for a show moderately frustrating to follow. Never underestimate the power of facial recognition, until you’re asked to remember people by numbers. Oh, No! Not #234! He/she/they was so…. Well… they did that one thing… didn’t they? Or was that #187? You inherently end up rooting for anyone they bother to give a name.

I Love LA- Since this got a second season, I’ll continue. It also has a talented cast, and it did make me laugh a few times. One of those new Friends-esque type shows, like Adults, where a group of this generation try and get through the day. The conversation around Zendaya was funny, and the audio description seemed fine. We didn’t get a lot of description around the masturbation, which sounds weird, but I don’t mean… like… how? But more like… under the covers? Above? Clothed? A guy just kinda walks in on a girl masturbating to another person over FaceTime. And that’s the gag. masturbation is truly always inherently hilarious, so no emphasis needed.

SNL- I kinda loved the extensive detail of Glen when he enters home base. The outfit, the pushed up sleeves, and the gold watch. Solid. As far as the AD track went, where sometimes it tramples the dialogue, this episode was edited well enough to not do that much at all. Maybe like a smidge, but really solid. I did love the return of MacGruber, and the Weekend Update was pretty savage.

Matlock- Jason Ritter is onto something. he thinks Maddie is the leak, though she and Olivia work the whole episode to gaslight him into thinking he’s crazy, which makes Olivia uncomfortable. This show reliably has good audio description, from looking at security camera footage, to text messages, I never feel left out. Side note: blind fam. Do you use a Roku? Do you have Paramount Plus? Are you as surprised as I am how long it has been since their app functioned properly for blind users and the narrator feature on Roku? Like… My God. Every time is trial and error, since I don’t know what show I’m clicking on.
