The Small Screen Diaries: 05/20/26

I do this through WordPress, and yesterday, i unlocked an achievement that my website has been read in at least 50 different countries. So, gracias, danke, grazie, Merci, Obrigado, Arigato, and all those other ways of expressing gratitude. Also, Hulu finally picked up The Testaments for a second season, so there’s that.

TV Shows Watched: The Boys: S5E8 (Amazon) with audio description, Witch Hat Atelier: S1E6 (CrunchyRoll) with audio description, Detective Hole: S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description, Gold Land: S1E2 (Disney Plus) with audio description, The Last Thing He Told Me: S2E8 (Apple) with audio description, and THe Lincoln Lawyer: S4E6 (Netflix) with audio description

The Boys- Not a perfect finale, by any stretch of the imagination, and maybe they should reconsider Gen V’s cancellation to do some course correction. Fans are hard to please, but sometimes, you gotta stick to your guns, and with The Boys, that often means doing the unpredictable, audacious, and insane. Read my full review, but thanks for five excellent seasons of audio description.

With Hat Atelier- Another Witch comes by and is mad that Kefie took on another apprentice, but Agat might get to step up as the locals need help from the witches. Seriously, the writing here is so good. There was actually a chunk of description here that mentioned how much of the screen/frame a character was in at the time. Like, what? Human narrators should be scared of not just the progression of AI voices, but excellent writers delivering robust description.

Detective Hole- The drunk loser at the center of this show, who is like one of the least compelling lead detectives due to lack of structure and backstory, gets his ass fired. Again, AI voice, human writer, and it is pretty solid. Not gonna lie.

Gold Land- I think this international import is human described. I remember staying to the end after the first episode, and for some reason, Hulu went human for this Korean crime drama. It’s solid, though its long ass episodes feel long. Both the first and second episodes broke an hour, and I’d argue their pacing would be better if they came in just under it.

The Last Thing He Told Me- A preposterous season finale, and seeing where they want to go in season three, and the fact that Apple still hasn’t made a renewal decision, I’m hoping this and Hijack end up getting the axe.I love that when I ask my AI if there will be a third season of Hijack, they mention that Apple hasn’t renewed the show, and that the producers are “waiting for a compelling idea to continue the story”. Based on what they thought was compelling for Season 2, that bar is very low.

The Lincoln Lawyer- The team suffers a loss, and Mickey makes an impossible choice. Neve Campbell kills it this episode though. Some great work from her. The audio description here is VSI, narrated by Roy Samuelson, a nice example of human narration that still has an impact. To be fair, I did like the human AD behind the other shows, I’m just not sure who narrated them.
