I had an opportunity to log some votes yesterday for the Dorian Awards (TV version), and it was so hard paring down categories. I’m sure there’s some rule about just putting my entire ballot here, I was delighted to find ways to represent shows like Hacks, Shrinking, From, The Testaments, Pluribus, The Pitt, Widows Bay, The Traitors, Chad Powers,Task, and Welcome To Dairy (among others). Shows I talked about how great they were on The Diaries, and then got to put my money where it counted. I’ll be anxious to see if anything I voted for actually makes it to the final batch of nominees.
TV Shows Watched: Spider-Noir: S1E4 (Amazon) with audio description, Imperfect Women: S1E7 (Apple) with audio description, XO Kitty: S3E3 (Netflix) with audio description, The Burbs: S1E8 (Peacock) with audio description, Love Story: S1E7 (Disney Plus) with audio description, and Elzabeth: S3E14? (Paramount) with audio description
Spider-Noir- We find out who survived the gunshot, which should not be much of a surprise, and Kat tells Ben about her plight, while Silver Man looks for a way to force the politicians in his pocket to do his bidding. he Spider has to fight off another powered individual, this realms version of Electro, and Kat makes one hell of a leap. What if she was wrong? Love this show. Nic Cage is great, and I hope Amazon goes with a second season.
Imperfect Women- I’m so confused by the twist at the end, since it makes me question the convenience of Howard’s behavior. They had Corey Stoll leaning in heavily on one thing the past few episodes, like some evil Bond villain, but why? What on earth? Great performances though, especially from Kerry Washington and elizabeth Moss.
XO Kitty- Mino’s friend, who is a girl, comes back into his life, which makes Kitty scatterbrained at a time when her cousin is assigning too much homework, and she’s drowning. How is she supposed to enjoy her Senior Year when her cousin is making her life miserable. Maybe a Meet Cute with another teacher? I love this AD track for using multiple narrators to read the subtitles. Paying for that shows Netflix prioritizes this show.
The Burbs- I prefer the film, despite a talented cast. I love Paula Pell and Marc Probst, and this show does end on a cliffhanger, so maybe it will be back. I definitely have asked myself if I would have enjoyed this show more had it had better audio description. It is possible. Vito’s AD here is just so dull, and I don’t understand why he gets chosen for sitcoms. The flat narration lovers are as perplexing to me as flat earthers.
Love Story- Ryan Murphy used to be a wonderful showrunner. He used to make quality TV. Now he makes sensationalist crap that lacks common sense. HE finishes this episode with a scene about JFK Jr being behind, in over his head, so while essentially drowning, and fighting his friend, he then takes a meeting to run for office? In the same breath? Come on. Emmy voters, please stay away from this show. You can do better.
Elzabeth- The first episode of Elzabeth where I didn’t like her. The debutante ball was fine, but Elzabeth prying at Alec and getting him to open up was the natural progression, but her suddenly going nuclear with “the people deserve to know!” On the guy she’s sleeping with, for something as inoffensively mundane, felt less like a choice of Elzabeth, and more like a plot or storyline the writers didn’t want to fuck with anymore, so instead of having Alec and Elzabeth evolve more as a couple and talk it through, they just immediately went Code Red. Not that I think Alec is a great character with longevity, but Elzabeth has shown more sympathy toward killers, and even the wife of the judge she hated. The AD was fine though, so that’s something.
