The Small Screen Diaries: 06/24/26

In case you’re keeping score, Peacock has opted not to do a second season of Ponies. The girls are fired after just one mission.

TV Shows Watched: Nemesis- S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description,Your Friends And Neighbors: S2E5 (Apple) with audio description, Cross: S2E7 (Amazon) with audio description, St Dennis Medical: S2E9 (Peacock) with audio description, America’s Culinary Cup: S1E4 (Paramount) with audio description, and Virgin River: S7E8 (Netflix) with audio description

Nemesis- I always feel so frustrated that this is the audio description for Nemesis. Someone looked at a predominantly black cast, and thought Vito was the guy. Nemesis is better than anything Tyler Perry has made in the last career. His entire career. it is smart, well written, shows off its ensemble well, has nice moments of tension and world building, it raises the stakes, and the cast is excellent. Whoever this is, should be given Perry’s contracts. If I didn’t love St Dennis Medical so much, Nemesis would be the best thing I saw all day.

Your Friends And Neighbors- Jon Hamm still carries the show, but the second season has started to move the needle a bit more on these supporting characters. It doesn’t seem to know what to do with Mel, other than have her in a crisis where she doesn’t know what to do either. Hamm is excellent here, and James Marsden has been a nice cast addition. The AD is pretty good too.

Cross- Nice audio description, and that betrayal! That headshot right at the end. Damn. I don’t love Cross as much, largely due to the ridiculously high bar of having to follow Morgan Freeman, which Aldis Hodge just can’t do.

St Dennis Medical- I laughed when she tried changing the game from “weirdest place you’ve had se” to “best source of fiber”. Not even close. This show has close to the possible audio description it can have for its format. There’s only just so much this can do without extended AD.

America’s Culinary Cup- Also fights its format, however, Media access Group does more here than the team behind Top Chef does for their AD. Nominally, but more still. CBS has yet to renew this Top Chef knockoff. NBC also cancelled their Top Chef knockoff Yes Chef, because these formats are hard to replicate.

Virgin River- Sappy Hallmark crap. I don’t know why I’ve seen seven seasons and counting of this. Jack and Mel go on Honeymoon, and Doc gets an offer he can refuse.
