The Small Screen Diaries- 07/14/24

I finished a show, and I’m putting it last so I can have spoilers. Let’s get out of the way Queenie (Hulu) which had our titular hero celebrate her birthday while navigating her complicated relationship with her mother. This show has come a long way from the series premiere, which I tonally couldn’t figure out what it was trying to say. It has gotten better, but it would still fall short as often the show has complex ideas, but the delivery is a bit messy. This episode, for example, has Queenie have a bit of an overly visceral reaction on … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/14/24

That 90’s Show: Season 2, Part A

Talk about a threat. Part A? You mean I just sat through ten more episodes of something no one really needed. I talked about this also in my YouTube review where I question why we are doing a 90’s Show. The original originally started in 1998, running for 8 seasons. they did try a spinoff, That 80’s Show, which ran one season. So, That 90’s Show started in 2022, at the beginning of a decade. But, the audience that started watching this show lived in the 90’s, and featured a lot of teenagers who related with the teenage cast. These … Continue reading That 90’s Show: Season 2, Part A

The Small Screen Diaries: 07/13/24

I finished season 1 of Exploding Kittens (Netflix), which now has a review on my YouTube channel, in case you forgot I’m on Youtube as well (YouTube.com/macthemovieguy), but I will say the back half of this really made me think about common slang terms, how common are they, and to whom? In one of the episodes, the teenage son Travis is killed by his friends, one of whom does a squat/stand in repetition. Liz Gutman, who wrote the narration, describe the motion as is, however find me a gamer that hasn’t heard of TeaBagging. I guess, some people wouldn’t necessarily … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 07/13/24

Summer Of Sam: 25th Anniversary

I’ve been using anniversaries as an excuse to celebrate the audio description behind certain films. Spike Lee’s Summer Of Sam actually has audio description on Paramount Plus, and I missed it upon release, and actually have never seen it. It boasts a promising cast, led by John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino, and Jennifer Esposito. Spike Lee loves to tell stories about New York City, so a time capsule back to the time when the Son OF Sam killer had a neighborhood. Lee uses his vast ensemble, which is much more than the four I already listed, to show this … Continue reading Summer Of Sam: 25th Anniversary

I Am Celine Dion

You might think this is a confession, letting you know after all these years, these mediocre stream of consciousness reviews are actually being written by Celine Dion. I mean, they are, but that’s not it. It’s not so much that Celine Dion is my ghost writer, but rather I’ve trained my AI to write reviews in the style of Celine Dion. So, because you loved me enough to read this, I’ll do this all by myself. Before streaming services, we used to have thoughtful conversations on our documentary subjects. Now, this is almost like content creation, with aspiring documentarians being … Continue reading I Am Celine Dion

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/12/24

A rather short day, for readers. I finished Sausage Party: Foodtopia (Amazon), and while I plan on doing a wider review, the short is that I think you would like it if you liked the movie. It is perhaps more risqué as they did not have to appease an MPAA. One episode has its own content advisory, but I kinda saw that writing on the wall. Then, I knocked out the first half of Exploding Kittens (Netflix), another new adult animation show. The voice cast here is solid, and the concept has promise. For some random reason, God and the … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/12/24

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Just like Top Gun came back after a long hiatus with its hero in the title, Beverly Hills Cop is back on the beat for a fourth entry, with most of Axel Foley’s name in the title. It a really odd and uncomfortable choice, and headed into this, I wasn’t sure that Netflix would be able to pull this off. Mark Malloy? A feature directorial debut? On this? This film had all the makings of another hot trash Netflix title that just gets put out to appease algorithms. After all, CBS has a quite high profile pilot for a TV … Continue reading Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/11/24

Yesterday was Slurpee day and all I got was The Boys (Amazon) and a Christmas Special? I guess for a show that always runs during a certain time of year, if they want to deal with Christmas, they just have to do it. Hacks had the same problem. So Ryan is filming a cringeworthy special, firecracker is more regarded by Homelander, Sage is back to normal, A-train is ready to get off at this stop, Milk needs to get his family out of town, Butcher is seeing things that aren’t there, Deep is having deep relationship problems with an octopus, … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/11/24

My Lady Jane: Season 1

I was sad that The Great was cancelled by Hulu without being given the opportunity to finish out its story. I was aware that the 4th season really should be its last, as the lack of Nicholas Hoult would have made it hard to do much more than a season to wrap up storylines, but instead we got three seasons and no ending. In comes My Lady Jane, with much of the same style of revisionist humor, delightful ensemble, and its own voice to help highlight the relevance of a historical footnote in Lady Jane Grey. While The Great certainly … Continue reading My Lady Jane: Season 1

The Ministry Of ungentlemanly Warfare

Guy Ritchie is one of those directors that I likely have seen 75% of their work. I know there are a few titles I’d have to cram if I was going to rank his body of work, but I used to be a big fan. even when he started to get commercialized, I still enjoyed his Sherlock Holmes movies. but, he’s not perfect, and some of his films just lack that Lock, Stock flair that attracted us to him in the first place. that is not the problem with The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, an action comedy that feels like … Continue reading The Ministry Of ungentlemanly Warfare

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/10/24

The Acolyte (Disney plus) showed us what happened when the Jedi faced off against Space Witches, in what I assume is the thing that we were about to get in Episode 6, but that episode was dedicated to talking about talking. This episode is better as things actually happen, it is by far the most Carrie Anne moss has had to do all season, and now we have a better idea. I’m not sure this show was written by anyone who had ever watched a Star Wars property thing before though. I also watched the first two episodes of the … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/10/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/09/24

I’m getting closer and closer to the final Sweet Tooth (Netflix). Gus was rescued last episode, by a much older hybrid, and we learn that hybrids have been around longer than most people know. The cave is the secret to saving the human race, which Gus wants to do, and now that he has his mom with him, he might get to do. There’s a knock at the door at the end of the episode, and even though just two seconds later Big Man was with everyone else talking about going out to find Gus, I’ve noticed that despite how … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/09/24

Black Barbie

Obviously, 2023 belonged to Barbie. it was the top grossing film worldwide, and managed multiple Oscar nominations, even winning for What Was I Made For? I feel like this documentary is not reactionary, but something that was in the works anyway. It explores how Barbie is important to black girls, and dolls in general. How black women have worked hard at Mattel to make sure Black Barbie exists, and that she’s not Barbie’s friend, because no one grows up wanting to be someone’s friend as their aspirational choice. this is retrospective, personal, and the only thing that’s lacking at all … Continue reading Black Barbie

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/08/24

It looks like the social media trend that had people turning on audio description for Bridgerton to make it steamier, is now also happening for The Acolyte, as people are watching the most recent episode where Manny Jacinto is shirtless and bathing himself. I’m all for this trend. turning on audio description creates a visible metric to the companies tasked with providing it, and their entire model is about providing things that will make them money and bring in subscribers. So if this really became a thing, I could see a streamer taking full advantage of it by trying to … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/08/24

Supacell: Season 1

I binged this thing so you don’t have to. Not that you shouldn’t, necessarily, but perhaps it will be more of a thing for you than it was for me. I already posted a video review, and I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the show. Supacell takes place in England, in what seems to be a sketchy neighborhood where gangs exist. The iMDB listing for this supports what I swear I picked up from the audio description, and that was that the five leads are all black. It’s in the plot summary for the show, that a … Continue reading Supacell: Season 1
