Well, in TV news, John Oliver inked a 3 year renewal for Last Week Tonight with HBO. The Traitors: UK is nearing a premiere date. Someone marvelous won Dancing With The Stars. The Critics Choice nominations were so interesting for the TV nominees this year. Ramon Rodriguez slid in for Will Trent over more obvious performers like Brian Cox for Succession. The actresses nominated for Fall Of the House Of usher would not have been my go to nominees. It’s very sad that Mark Hamill was snubbed for that series. Had no idea this was happening, but apparently Baz Luhrmann recut his film Australia and released it on Hulu as a six part limited series. What an interesting concept. Yesterday, we lost a former First Lady with Roslyn Carter, who made it to 96. We also lost an actor I had forgotten could still be alive, Joss Ackland, who made for a mean villain in in the Lethal Weapon franchise, but also appeared in 90’s Disney films including A Kid In King Arthur’s Court and the Mighty Ducks films. A couple of things. It’s like these companies were waiting for the strike to end to start their bad behavior. Immediately following news of the strike ending, Warner Bros celebrated by totally and permanently shelving Coyote Vs Acme, another finished feature project, and using it as a tax write-off. I’m getting a little tired of renewals not meaning anything anymore. Peacock has reversed its decision on a second season of Bumper In Berlin. Why even bother with renewals? Why lie to fans if your plan is to just piss them off later on by yanking the show away? The strike has been going on for a lot longer than the studios thought they would. That’s for sure. I haven’t seen another movie abandon ship from 2023 yet. While not TV news, I am always looking around the inter webz for Oscar thoughts, and I do love the people predicting the Oscars who acknowledge that it’s weird that everyone is predicting the same things. I know, which is why I’m actually trying not to. This time last year, we had Tom Cruise and Hugh Jackman as frontrunners. While I watch these older shows, I can’t help but think how much better they would be with audio description, and I want a world where we also prioritize the back catalog of TV shows as well as films. We have some news finally out of comic con. In The Walking Dead Universe, The Walking Dead: Dead City and Daryl Dixon both have gotten second season pickups. Meanwhile, Amazon was able to run a promo for the upcoming second season of Invincible, and Peacock showed off the upcoming John Wick spinoff The Continental, which was originally being developed at Starz. Remember, we are just a few days away from SAG-AFTRA going on strike. There are people currently still working, and those people would stop.
