The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings

Once again I’m running down the sixty shows on my broad watchlist. Joining the list this week, which was fairly slow for new shows, are The Sandman (Netflix), All Of Us Are Dead (Netflix), The Office (Peacock), Such Brave Girls (Hulu), Nautilus (AMC Plus), Dexter (Paramount Plus), and Prison Break (Netflix). I wrapped some shows, and anything that would rank outside the top 60 dies. WINNER: Squid Game (Netflix) with audio description- I knew I was going to lose my favorites. After the tragic uprising didn’t work last season, it meant playing out Squid Game till the end. I’m only … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings

O’Dessa

Only the power of music can save your soul. I feel like we’ve seen this before. But, in Hulu’s exclusive premiere, O’dessa, the power of music compels you. What it compels you to do is a different question. it is possible that given time, O’dessa could be respected as a cult phenomenon. There are so many specific examples of movies that, for better or worse, popped into the zeitgeist even though by all accounts they shouldn’t have. Grease 2 has its own little following of fans, who either ironically or unironically watch the initial disappointment. when repo: the genetic Opera … Continue reading O’Dessa

Control Freak

Control Freak (Hulu)- The Life Coach In This Movie Would Empower You To Watch Something Else What I can say about Control freak is that it has good audio description. Roy Samuelson is narrating this, and while he’s pretty much his consistent usual strong performer, this is a horror film, so the devil in these details belongs to the audio description writer. For a film that isn’t pervasively gory, but does have fleeting moments, and even some attempts at jump scares, the writing is strong. From describing pus coming out of a wound, to the manifestation of a demon, and an … Continue reading Control Freak

Night Bitch

Night Bitch- Amy Adams is The Most Relatable Mother Of 2024 Quick Take: I’m really just catching up in order, and now that this is on Hulu, I was ready to skip my first thoughts, and wait till I get to my inevitable second look with audio description. However, Disney had other plans. They dropped Night Bitch on Hulu without giving a consideration to making sure the necessary audio description was also day and date. It is funny how many times this has happened, and Disney never really apologizes, or improves. And, yes, Hulu, Fox Searchlight, they are Disney brands. … Continue reading Night Bitch

Carved

Carved (Hulu)- A Spooky Season Review I would not be surprised at all if the VFX didn’t live up to the expectations of sighted audiences. Luckily for Carved, you can have Asylum level VFX, and I’d have no idea, but I can just assume this production didn’t have the highest of budgets. that’s not to say you need a large budget, and for something like Carved, it would be hard to play broadly. Carved is a horror comedy about a mutated pumpkin that reaches its breaking point, coming alive, and murdering all those who dare to carve a pumpkin on … Continue reading Carved

Mr. Crockett

Mr Crockett (Hulu)- A Spooky Season Review He was not born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, that is for sure. Hulu’s original horror film takes a page from some other films like The Babadook and Come Play, and hopes for the best. This Mr. Crockett is a nightmare fuel children’s television host that comes to life after a young boy finds an old VHS recording. Suddenly, that boys mother finds herself in a battle over this boy’s soul with H.P. Lovecraft’s answer to Mr. rogers Neighborhood. The other films are better. The Babadook features a mom who has to fight … Continue reading Mr. Crockett

Hold Your Breath

Hold Your Breath (Hulu)- A Spooky Season Review A slightly ironic title, as I’m sure no one has been holding their breath for this review. I posted this video review weeks ago, and it currently has two views. The world could not be less interested in this film. Sarah Paulson is back on Hulu with another horror title, only this one is a bit more ambiguous. I would definitely recommend Run over this. Excellent film, and she’s great in it. Here, this takes place in the Dust Bowl, and tries to tackle a ton of complex issues including the role … Continue reading Hold Your Breath

Kinds Of Kindness

I don’t know how many other critics consider themselves a work in progress, but I’m always trying to absorb stuff about film from everywhere. More recently, podcasts, and when i hear this title, it makes me wonder what the team at You Are Good would say about a film that suggest it might be about emotions and feelings, and is kind of adjacent to that, because we are always feeling or emoting, but the title isn’t the nail on the head you assume it is. Then again, was Poor Things? The Lobster? Do you even care what yorgos titles his … Continue reading Kinds Of Kindness

The Supremes At Earl’s All You Can eat

I think when people initially were buzzing about the Oscar potential for this, they thought it was about the actual Supremes. it is not. It is about three women who are so tight they have a name for themselves. Kind of like The Plastics, but if those girls had gotten to choose their nickname. Other than corralling three great actresses in Uzo Aduba, Sanaa Lathan, and Aunjuane Ellis Taylor, the movie is a lot like so many others that have come before it with a group of women who meet somewhere and age gracefully together. we get the flashbacks to … Continue reading The Supremes At Earl’s All You Can eat

Sleeping Dogs

Somewhere in between playing an exorcist… twice… Russell Crowe thought this Memento-esque crime drama was something he needed to check off his bucket list. This is, of course, Academy Award Winner Russell Crowe, and I guess he hasn’t switch his phone bill to one of the hot button cheap alternatives, so he’s gotta pay the bills. Theatrical has gotten weird, as a medium, as films that look like they would go theatrical end up being really good fodder for these mystery movie nights these major chains host. I know Liam Neeson has had more than a few of his recent … Continue reading Sleeping Dogs

The Royal Hotel- A Second Look

Rather than update my old review, I wanted to make a point that I came back around to The Royal Hotel after Hulu addded audio description. Originally, they dropped this film a few months back, and it did not have audio description. since then, Neon has become a little more aware of their content heading to Hulu, and rectified the lack of accessibility. So, it is no longer “unwatchable”.\ It very much is a wild experience watching a film I’ve never visually seen without audio description, and now doing it again. there were so many things I was unable to … Continue reading The Royal Hotel- A Second Look
