Frankenstein (2025)

Sometimes the interesting thing about film is watching the growth of an auteur. Depending on when you were born, you might have gotten to see the rise of certain artists honing their craft, but the exciting part is that first film, and feeling like you just witnessed the birth of something. I’d consider myself a big fan of Del toro, who even when he doesn’t top himself as a director, certainly is never boring. he has such a love for film, and for the celebration of monsters, that it really does carry through all the themes. Even his stop-motion animated … Continue reading Frankenstein (2025)

The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings

Once again I’m running down the sixty shows on my broad watchlist. Joining the list this week, which was fairly slow for new shows, are The Sandman (Netflix), All Of Us Are Dead (Netflix), The Office (Peacock), Such Brave Girls (Hulu), Nautilus (AMC Plus), Dexter (Paramount Plus), and Prison Break (Netflix). I wrapped some shows, and anything that would rank outside the top 60 dies. WINNER: Squid Game (Netflix) with audio description- I knew I was going to lose my favorites. After the tragic uprising didn’t work last season, it meant playing out Squid Game till the end. I’m only … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings

Going In blind: on Swift horses

While the lack of blind film critics means that studios are not yet accustomed to attaching an English Audio description track to digital (or even physical) screeners, I have to believe that there are visually impaired critics who would benefit, but more likely guild members. So it always baffles me when i get a screener for a film like on Swift horses, which is being released by Sony Pictures Classics, and there’s no description. Not only does their screener platform support changing the audio track, if an alternate one were uploaded, but they make audio description for their titles on … Continue reading Going In blind: on Swift horses

Oh Canada

Oh, Canada- Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Jacob Elordi, Paul Schrader Quick Take: Another screener without audio description. Paul Schrader, whose last film I also did not have audio description for (Master Gardener) is back with Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, and Jacob Elordi for a Wes Anderson adjacent look at a man who was a draft dodger. There’s some quirky quality in interviewing the man as an older man (Gere), and seeing him in flashbacks as his younger self (Elordi). However, even though Schrader occasionally knocks films out of the park, which gets me interested, it does seem like his last … Continue reading Oh Canada

Salt burn

Where I Watched It: Amazon English Audio Description Provided By: Deluxe Written By Edwin Wells Directed By: Matthew Vickers Cast: Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi,Rosamund Pike, Richard E Grant, Archie Madekwe, Alison Oliver, and Carey Mulligan Written and Directed By: Emerald Fennell It’s the salacious film of the year. Scandalous. Divisive. Is it a pretentious work, or has writer/director Emerald Fennell once again struck gold after her debut with Promising Young Woman? In what can only be an homage to the aspirations of youth in the novels like Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Fennell has chosen her whip smart protagonist to … Continue reading Salt burn

Priscilla

Where I Watched It: Digital Copy English Audio Description Provided By: Deluxe Narrated By: Laura Post Cast: Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi Written and Directed By: Sofia Coppola There’s somewhat of a theme that runs in Sofia Coppola’s films often about young women, isolation, and hotels. Her latest entry, Priscilla is being hailed by some as her best work since lost In Translation, but she hasn’t really gone anywhere. She’s been making movies, and some of them have been quite good. Priscilla is just another reminder that Coppola is an underrated filmmaker who is still at the top of her … Continue reading Priscilla
