The Small Screen Diaries- 02/04/24

the way my week works, is that I typically try and introduce new shows on Sunday to my rotation, and then Monday starts going through another episode of each show I’ve decided to continue with. So, this Sunday, my watching of Sexy Beast (Paramount Plus) was so disjointed and interrupted, I decided I’d just use its “second” episode that would happen later this week to rewatch the pilot coherently. but, technically I tried. While I do really enjoy the Jonathan Glazer film on which the series is adapted, it’s been years since I’ve seen the film. At least twenty, but … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 02/04/24

Yesterday was the nominations for the Critics Choice Film section, and my quick hot take is: they are more concerned with being a bellwether for predicting the Oscar’s that they aren’t doing anything interesting anymore. I think their choices are solid, and mostly what everyone is talking about, with very few exceptions. It’s just that I’ve spent the whole year listening to critics all over the internet talk about their undying love of Past Lives, and how much they want to give Selene Song an Oscar nomination in director, or how is’t a shame that Tao Yoo and John Meggaro … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 12/13/23

A couple of things. It’s like these companies were waiting for the strike to end to start their bad behavior. Immediately following news of the strike ending, Warner Bros celebrated by totally and permanently shelving Coyote Vs Acme, another finished feature project, and using it as a tax write-off. So, once again, a ton of artists worked on a film for months, just so it can live forever in a closet. Meanwhile, ABC should have already known the fates of The Rookie Feds and The Good Lawyer, because as soon as the strike was over, ABC cancelled The Rookie Feds, … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 11/09/23

I do believe as I’m writing this, that the Maine mass shooter is still at large. A tremendous tragedy we seem unable and unwilling to stop, or even attempt to reduce the possibility of recurrence. Yesterday, Paramount Plus did cancel two shows, Rabbit Hole and Fatal Attraction, neither surprised me. 9) SeaQuest DSV (Peacock) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended I tend to normally give this show a grade. Conceptually, I understand it from watching it as a kid. Two big new shows dropped yesterday. Also, Hulu, which just brought back moonlighting, announced the return of LA Law in November (not the remake). And there was news of Halloween being purchased for TV rights and a cinematic universe. So look for a Michael Myers TV show as well as I guess an Avengers style Myers universe? 10) The Ren and Stimpy Show (Paramount Plus) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended While I am still enjoying a little taste of nostalgia, this series very much relies on sight gags and really needs audio description. It also has some perfect gags, … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 10/12/23

Welcome to Spooky Season, where I will be stepping up your coverage of the scariest and spookiest films to watch this season. But for today, it’s just a regular old roundup. 14) The Continental (Peacock) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Limited From the minds of people who never watched the original John Wick franchise comes a boring show with little to no action sequences and more dialogue in one episode than in the entire John Wick universe. I hate this show. Episode Grade: D+ 13) The Summer I Turned Pretty (Amazon) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Renewed I’m not really … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/30/23

The Dancing With The Stars drama is getting real. A quick update for those who are out of the loop. Dancing With The Stars currently has its contestants in rehearsal for the upcoming season. The WGA has been picketing these rehearsals, and putting pressure specifically on SAG members Alyson Hannigan, Mira Sorvino, and Matt Walsh. The pressure was enough that ABC is mulling pushing back the premiere, as Walsh has caved and paused his participation with the show. However! Turns out, SAG is the honey badger in this scenario, and they told the WGA “We give zero fucks what you … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/21/23

Here’s the thing I don’t get. The Drew Barrymore show is being picketed, because Drew decided to go back to work, but Whoopi is on the View, and obviously a member of SAG since she’s still acting. So, why is Whoopi allowed to work on a talk show but Drew is not? Make it make sense. 8) Designing Women (ABC) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended Someone really needs the Suzanne special touch when it comes to some beauty tips, or styling tips, but Delta Burke isn’t so sure she wants to give away trade secrets. NCIS has an Australian spinoff that is now slated to air in Primetime this fall. So, get ready for NCIS Sydney. No, I’m not joking. 10) 10) Justified (Hulu) English Audio Description?: No Status: Revival Just Ended This time it wasn’t just the shootouts that rendered this episode unwatchable, but also a car explosion. Did it kill anyone? It sounded like Neal McDonaugh was in a car, got out, and then it exploded. I would think he would be standing too close. But I don’t know, because this show is inaccessible. Well, Hulu rocked the internet with the cancellation of The Great. Just me posting that on my personal facebook feed got more comments than anything I’ve posted in the past month. People are irate to say the least. I’m not really sure what that decision was, to not announce a final season, but it’s a very bizarre call for a streamer about to raise their prices. in other TV news, the Lincoln Lawyer was picked up officially by Netflix for Season 3, which I’m not surprised by at all. 12) Outlander (Starz) English Audio Description?: No Status: Final Season Still … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/30/23

RIP Ron Cephas Jones. Only 66. Wow. He’s sure to be known for his work on This Is Us, but he’s done many other projects, and just didn’t gain that level of recognition (or Emmy award) until that show. his daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones is also a brilliant actress, currently starring on Starz’s Blindspotting. 13) Hey Dude (Paramount Plus) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended I remember loving this show so much as a kid. I just saw some encouraging news for fans of Twisted Metal. The debut of that series (which I will start soon) is considered to be Peacock’s most watched comedy original thus far. So if you wanted a second season, there’s a good chance. Then again, FOX did cancel and ship off their most watched series because it was too expensive, so there’s that. 13) 8 Simple Rules (Disney Plus) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended Considering a large chunk of what makes this episode funny is some physical comedy from john Ritter, I’d say his storyline didn’t work for me. … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/09/23

I gotta be honest and say, that while i realize this strike is keeping people from working, I 100% support it until at least the studios give up on abusing the use of AI. honestly, I’m loving catching up on shows, and rewatching them. Even though Sony recently had to make a slew of changes to their release schedule, pushing back several films, there’s never been a better time to catch up on that one show (or multiple) that you just never watched but always meant to. 14) 8 Simple Rules (Disney Plus) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended Bridget … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/29/23

I’ve been deep diving a bit more into the SAG-AFTRA talks and some of the stuff they’re requesting isn’t unreasonable. Actually, none of it is. Just take some of these CEO salaries, lower them, and you’ll have the money to pay for some of this stuff. Also, for the poor people without cable or Peacock, Yellowstone is coming to CBS in the fall since they are a little short on new programming. Add to that, the UK version of Ghosts, which I’m at least interested in checking out.

12) 8 Simple Rules (Disney plus) English Audio Description?: No Sorry, this was a tough day to rank, and 8 Simple Rules just felt like it missed a mark the most. This episode had a solid reference to Three’s Company, but squandered the “kids out of the house” moment by not letting the adults actually have any meaningful time together. john Ritter’s time on the show was fleeting, and I can’t help but think this missed a mark to show that Paul and Kate were more than just parents. What made it worse was that Kate tried so hard to … Continue reading I’ve been deep diving a bit more into the SAG-AFTRA talks and some of the stuff they’re requesting isn’t unreasonable. Emmy Nominations are being announced at 11:30EST this morning. may the odds be ever in your shows favor. Unless your show is Yellowstone. Sex Education is ending with Season 4. I’m OK with that. It’s a show about High Schoolers. one of their main cast is now Doctor Who. And, several key cast aren’t coming back for the final season. Plus, for a show that should be relatively easy to shoot, it’s taking a really long time for this season to roll out. 13) Cheers (Paramount Plus) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended Let me tell you. Well, fans of SWAT have had a very confusing past couple of days. After cancelling the hit drama on Friday, and seeing a torrent of backlash for cancelling a show that has risen in ratings every season, CBS has reversed its decision and given SWATT a 7th season renewal. That renewal comes at the expense of Freshman drama East New York, which was looking good for renewal and instead got the boot. A couple more interesting WGA Strike tidbits. The Rings Of Power was told to continue filming without it’s showrunners (who are WGA members, and on strike). So if you were concerned about the quality last season, this could either be a good or bad thing. Probably bad though. And Evil, which was finishing filming on its fourth season, ended up wrapping filming early because the strike was too disruptive. I don’t know how you end early in a positive way. I would assume that means scenes are not being shot. I would think that affects the continuity of the show. … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/07/23
