Starring: Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, and the rest of the gang.
Some people were disappointed with The Muppets. I’ve seen mixed reviews. Honestly, this works for me a lot like the movies have. The movies aren’t really “rolling on the floor” funny either. It’s a smarter writing, often eliciting a smirk, or just a quiet internal laugh. It doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the pilot, it’s just not as funny as some other TV shows are out there.
The show takes The Office style approach to The Muppets, casting them all in roles where they are themselves, but instead of running The Muppet Show, they now produce a nightly talk show for Miss Piggy. Kermit and Piggy have broken up, and Kermit is now with a new pig. Fozzie is dating a human. These are the main plot stories in the pilot, which also featured guest appearances from Elizabeth Banks and Tom Bergeron.
Is it reinventing the wheel? Not really. Is it nice to see The Muppets back on TV? Yeah. And this is not a bad vehicle for them, it just needs a little bit of tweaking.
I like the format, but we need stronger writing and better jokes.
