The Too Much TV Roundup- July 10th

OK, so Emmy nominations are announced tomorrow, so I spent the bulk of the day catching up on some shows I hadn’t started yet to formulate a brief opinion on them. Some I watched 2 episodes of, so this list is gonna look weird. It’s just for today. Later, check out my list of my favorite picks from the past year in television, first on my YouTube, then on here a little after.

But for now, this is just the rankings of what I saw yesterday.

1) Girls5Eva (Peacock)

English Audio Description: Ys

My love for Girls5Eva knows no bounds, as you will soon find out on my awards list. So, of course this ranked on top for the day. Watching Wiki lose her crap over not being immediately chosen to sing one of the solos in a song that clearly wasn’t written for her was comedy gold. And, who else would have watched P-BAG?

Episode Grade: A

2) The Offer (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I just knew that character was going to die. Not, because this is historically accurate or anything, but… just vibes. You know? hint: One of these actors in this cast wins an award from me. But which one?

Episode Grade: A

3) Only Murders In The Building (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Do I think that keeping up on Season 2 affected my voting on Season 1? Perhaps. It does remind me how good these actors are, but season 2 is its own monster, with the second episode of the season revolving around this hilarious painting, and a wonderful guest appearance from Shirley Maclaine.

Episode Grade: A

4) The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m starting to get into this a bit more. It still feels very weird that this cast was assembled for this show. I still question the casting, but David E Kelly behind this is giving it the right vibe it needs in each episode. Just the second one for me so far.

Episode Grade: A-

5) That Damn michael Che (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description: Yes

He always blends his own brand of humor into his sketches. This was just me starting Season 2, and it’s creative, and I’m glad HBO MAX has stuck with it. I hope they continue to.

Episode Grade: A-

6) Candy (Hulu)

Watched the first of the five episodes today, and I wasn’t really floored until the very end. When they showed the body, and also Candy’s relief at the gunshot wound (like… did someone else come in and shoot her?) I’m now intrigued. But for the first 95% of this episode, I just thought I was watching another Thing About Pam.

Episode Grade: B+

7) Pistol (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Supposedly the foundation of The Sex Pistols. The first episode was interesting enough, and I felt like I got a grasp of the series without needing to move further for more awards consideration. It’s an ensemble limited, and it was hard to pick one standout performance from the pilot, which I thought was good not great.

Episode Grade: B

8) The Essex Serpent (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description Available?: yes

this show bounced from “oh this could happen” to “what the hell is going on?” It reminded me of the similar vibe Shining Girls is going for, blending reality with imagination. I watched the first two episodes, and I’m far less engrossed in this Tom Huddleston limited series.

Episodes Grade: B-

9) Conversations With Friends (Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

I’m not sure what the plot is. Not that the show is bad, I literally jsut think the show is conversations with friends. it is what it advertised. I managed two of these episodes, and I didn’t feel like I had missed out on an epic new show.

Episodes Grade: B-

10) Heartstopper (Netflix)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

An LGBT romance that starts right out and doesn’t build. We’re given two gay male leads right up front, but one is trying to still figure some stuff out. It’s not that the show was bad, I really wanted to squeeze another half hour in, but I just ran out of time. It’s just that with only one episode under my belt, I didn’t notice any acting that was better than anything else i was watching, and the hype for this series was so strong. Fun fact, I believe there’s some reason this is ineligible at this years Emmy awards, which is a reason I waited until now. That, plus it already got picked up for a second season.

Episode Grade: B-

So I didn’t watch anything terrible, and I basically squeezed in everything that was on my “watchlist” before I could do my awards.
