A couple of shows in this race today. Who ended up on top?
7) My Next Guest… (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: No
I’m not really grading this program. i didn’t finish it. There was no audio description, which meant that whenever Zelenskyy was speaking, i didn’t understand most of what he said. I actually don’t know if his translator was speaking for him, as I sometimes heard someone with a Ukrainian accent, but it was all a bit confusing. I didn’t finish this program, so i feel uncomfortable grading it.
Episode Grade: Unwatchable.
6) Rami (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
I am somehow not enjoying this third season of Rami, which i feel like is focusing more on the ensemble cast around Rami than Rami himself. I’m sure there was an artistic choice here to focus stories and flesh out the ensemble, but for a show where the title is named after one character, it does feel a bit odd to spend so much time away from him every episode.
Episode Grade: B-
5) The Mysterious Benedict Society (Disney Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
While I’m not enjoying the second season as much as I did the first, I do have to say that the audio description on this program is terrific. I meant to mention that after watching the first episode, when I really noticed the detail in attention taken to the opening credits, which sometimes are glossed over. But here, the team has taken great lengths to not just describe this in a way that feels very appropriate for the target audience, but also makes it feel like these random objects of fancy are popping off the screen. I wish I could rate this show higher, because it has truly exceptionally above average audio description
Episode Grade: B
4) So Help Me Todd (CBS/Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Since I’m spending a bit more time talking about AD, and this episode of Todd was just solid if you’re already a fan, with perhaps a boost of emotional weight at the end, I figured I’d mention how weird it is to hear audio description that constantly reminds you that if you’re here by mistake, you can always turn this feature off. It’s unique to CBS programming, and I didn’t realize it was such a problem for them. It’s weird to hear this interjected into the audio description for these programs at points when a narrator could be offering productive audio description, but instead has to cater to the confused few people who might have stumbled upon this. Could you imagine this being applied in other aspects of life? Like, you’re doing your business in the bathroom, and a voice comes on at random intervals to remind you that this is the men’s bathroom, and if you’ve stumbled here by error, the door is over there, and if you’re looking for the women’s bathroom, it’s across the hall. Then, you just go back to your routine. It’s just weird. “This is Wal-Mart. If you have entered Wal-Mart by accident, please use the exit doors located at the front of the facility.”
Episode Grade: B+
3) Mythic Quest (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Honestly, my top three shows really are tied, and trying to rank them is killing me. This Christmas episode of Mythic quest was hilarious and everything I needed. It now joins the Ted Lasso holiday episode as must-watches over on Apple Plus.
Episode Grade: A
2) The midnight Club (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
No only did we get Anya’s backstory, but AAlonka learned a bit more about the history of the place, and it was time to hear one more story. That story, featuring time travel, and a tragic end, was actually a really great story. I loved the Wargames aspect to it, but then the time traveling just changed it all around. Also, this show has excellent audio description.
Episode Grade: A
1) The Good Fight (CBS/Paramount plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
There were so many little moments in this episode that were great, even if the second to last episode was a bit bonkers. Ultimately, it was that final scene, and the acting between Christine Baranski and Gary Cole that made me put this on top. I will miss this show. I know I only have 1 episode left.
