The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/10/23

Welcome back to a world of television, and i have a few more minutes to write this today, so here we go.

6) His Dark Materials (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’ll admit, sometimes the allegories that Phillip Pullman used in his novels went a bit above my head, but in episode two of the final season, they just come right out. Lots of talk about whether or not she is or isn’t the daughter of Eve, and it pulls you back into that part of the story. but, two episodes in, and i still feel like I’m just watching a new show. I must have totally deleted the first two seasons from my mind.

Episode Grade: B-

5) Emily In Paris (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

It was kind of hard to come back from that very freeing episode where Emily set herself free, unemployed but free. And because of that, this episode, where Sylvia finds out that Emily was helping with this pitch she loves, just kind felt deflated somehow. Now it feels like Emily is in transition, but it also feels like a lull in the season. Maybe a necessary one, but a lull nonetheless.

Episode Grade: B

4) The Watcher (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Ryan Murphy just needed that one more episode. He just had to have it. This finale shit the bed in many regards. It had a lot going on, from watching the family sell the house, to learning who the Watcher was, only to find out that it was a lie to just give them closure. Then, someone new moves in, and Murphy spends the whole damn episode trying to make you believe almost like there is no Watcher, and that everyone is The Watcher, because everyone is so equally obsessed with this house. Great performance here from Jennifer Coolidge though.

Episode Grade: B

3) Willow (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Awwwwww…… I really liked those woodsy women. Damn. If that was a video game, I would have spent a while trying to figure out if there was a loophole that could have saved them and kept them as companions on my journey. This show, three episodes in, is moderately entertaining, but always falls short of ever being great.

Episode Grade: B+

2) Fleischman Is in Trouble (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Did I fever dream audio description on the first episode? Is it because there is narration already built in… that I thought…. Whatever it is, this Jesse Eisenberg drama is actually catching my attention, as he spends most of the first episode trying to figure out where the hell his wife is. I want to sympathize from her angle, but the fact that she isn’t responding even to her own kids, who now think she’s dead, makes me hate her. We shall see how this show develops. But, as a rule, you can fight with your spouse, but if you go radio silent on your kids for so long they think you’re dead, you’re parenting wrong.

Episode Grade: A-

1) Abbott elementary (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Man, I mean, there were some funny moments… but that scene. It’s so rare for this show to press pause, take a step back, and have a real moment. Lisa Ann Walters, AKA the most underrated cast member, killed it this week with an episode centered on reading, and a little girl she believed was struggling. When she tried to talk to her dismissive parents, I knew the show had something coming, but i didn’t expect that home run of a scene where she talks to the little girl about her reading. There was so much subtext, and compassion, it was a rare and beautiful moment for this Golden Globe winning comedy.

Episode Grade: A+
