SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
10) Sheila McCarthy (Women Talking)
9) Dolly Deleon (Triangle Of Sadness)
8) Gina McKee (My Policeman)
7) Hong Chou (The Whale)
6) Danai Gurira (Black Panther Wakanda Forever)
5) Mia Isaac (Not OK)
4) Margot Robbie (Babylon)
3) Angela Bassett (Black Panther Wakanda Forever)
2) Carrie Condon (The Banshees Of inisherin)
1) Michelle Williams (The Fablemans)
I strongly believe Williams is a supporting role, with not much more screentime than her counterpart, Paul Dano. Even though I’ve criticized a lot of what she’s done this awards season, it’s about the performance, and she’s my favorite here of the year. This list is not a backlash to the Oscars. I dropped both EEAAO actress out after feeling like that film was carried so much by Michelle Yeoh. I rarely do what is expected. Last year, I picked Katherine Hunter for The Tragedy Of Macbeth.
SUPPORTING ACTOR:
10) Pedro Pascal (The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent)
9) Wes Studi ( A Love Song)
8) Paul Dano (The Batman)
7) Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway)
6) John Tuturro (The Batman)
5) Marc Maron (To Leslie)
4) Paul Dano (The Fablemans)
3) Brad Pitt (Babylon)
2) Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees Of Inisherin)
1) Mark Rylance (bones and All)
While Bones and All is a tough watch, there’s no comparison. He disappears into a very complex role that has to be creepy and at times oddly endearing, but also terrifying. It’s one hell of a role. Yeah, I think if that was an unknown actor and not Ke huy Kwon, no one would have cared. In fact, if that had been an unknown actor, it would have likely opened up a campaign for james hong. Last year, I picked Jason Issacs for Mass.
BEST ACTRESS:
10) Amber Midthunder (Prey)
9) Leticia Wright (Black Panther Wakanda Forever)
8) Anya Taylor Joy (The Menu)
7) Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
6) Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie)
5) Cate Blanchett (tar)
4) Danielle Detweiler (Till)
3) Emma Thompson (Good Luck To you Leo Grande)
2) Ana De Armas (blonde)
1) Dale Dickey (A Love Song)
Sadly, no one saw A Love Song, so one of our most reliable character actresses couldn’t get into this years race. Last year, I chose Amelia Jones for Coda. This year, there were several performances I couldn’t squeeze in, and this is the category that really made me want to do more than 10 next year.
BEST ACTOR:
Gabriel LaBelle (The Fablemans)
9) Daryl McCormack (Good Luck To you Leo Grande)
8) Nicolas Cage (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent)
8) Tom Cruise (top Gun Maverick)
6) Ralph Fiennes (The Menu)
5) Mason Thames (The Black Phone)
4) Mark Rylance (The Outfit)
3) Brendan Fraser (The Whale)
2) John Cho (Don’t Make me Go)
1) Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin)
My mind was made up on the second viewing of Banshees. It’s just such a great performance from an actor who delivered 4 terrific performances this year. Last year, I chose Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power Of The Dog.
BREAKTHROUGH DIRECTOR:
Charlotte Wells (After Sun)
I think she had the best first feature, and the most promising debut.
BEST DIRECTOR:
10) Ryan Coogler (Black Panther: wakanda Forever)
9) Mark Mylad (The menu)
8) Steven Spielberg (The Fablemans)
7) Matt Reeves (The Batman)
6) Robert Eggers (The northman)
5) The Daniels (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
4) Guillermo Del Toro (Pinocchio)
3) Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone)
2) Martin McDonagh (The Banshees Of inisherin)
1) Edward Burger (All Quiet On The Western Front)
I generally look at which director contributed the most to the success of a film I liked, either because I’m familiar with their established work, or a new face that I felt made some interesting choices. So, Edward Burger wins here. Last year, I chose Steven Spielberg for making me like West Side Story.
BEST ENSEMBLE:
10) The Black Phone
9) The Menu
8) Babylon
7) Top Gun Maverick
6) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
5) The Fablemans
4) The Woman King
3) All Quiet On The Western Front
2) The batman
1) Women Talking
This is usually like a depth of bench award. Those films that have so many great performances it becomes hard to recognize them. I usually don’t recognize smaller casts where all the great performances can be recognized (like banshees).

1) All Quiet On The Western Front
I saw 294 titles released in 2022. So my Top 25 aren’t even representative of all the films I gave either an A or A- to. but, yes, no film shook me this year like All Quiet. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.
