The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/11/23

First, shoutout to Alex Newell who became the second alumni of The Glee Project to win a Tony Award. Who’s next? Also, as this is June 12th, i must start off todays roundup by dedicating this in the memory of the 49 lives lost while dancing at the Pulse nightclub in my city. #OnePulse

11) City On fire (Apple plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I really just didn’t think this was a good pilot. in terms of structure, and getting the audience invested in the characters and story, i don’t think it achieved any of that. It’s kind of a shame, because Apple has had a few pilots that really did set up their shows rather well recently, like Silo and Dear Edward. I’m not really sure who greenlit this. If I was shown this pilot, I would not have even ordered this to series. I’m debating about whether or not to give this show a second episode.I don’t aggressively hate the series, I just think this was a failure of a pilot episode. you can’t just mention 9/11 and expect that people will watch.

Episode Grade: D+

10) Family Matters (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

You know, I’m really questioning during my rewatch of this show, what it was about this that I enjoyed in the first place. I think it might just be a mix of the era, and first season jitters, but some of the cast aren’t great actors. Darius McCrary is on training wheels right now.

Episode Grade: C+

9) Clone High MAX)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revived

Still trying to watch the original, but in general, without audio description, I ahven’t really enjoyed an episode fully yet. Maybe I should just skip ahead to the reboot?

Episode Grade: C+

8) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

It’s funny how memorable and perfect the pilot is, but how forgettable this second episode was. As a big fan of this as a kid, i didn’t remember episode 2 at all. I did think about if we did audio description for this series, would the narrator mention skin color? Like, while none of the characters match any real life skin colors except perhaps Doug, I think blind kids would want to know Roger is green.

Episode Grade: B

7) Mulligan (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: not Yet Renewed

This is some weird combination of Idiocracy and Independence Day. After aliens come and wipe most of us out, someone who is essentially a dumbass ends up being President because they blew up the aliens and saved the world. I didn’t feel like I quite knew the voice this show was going for after just one episode, but it wasn’t bad either.

Episode Grade: B

6) bufffy The Vampire Slayer (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

No audio description makes me sad. All that original Buffy Scooby dynamic is intact, but the fight scenes are tough. The ending of this episode doesn’t make sense since i didn’t get audio description for it. Funny that I saw the title of the next episode, and instantly remembered which one that was.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Trophy Wife (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The break up gave the best friend character some more exposure, but oddly it was how Marcia Gay Harden still managed to be hilarious in an episode that wasn’t about her, with her whole “You don’t pull people aside, I pull people aside” speech. She is terrifying.

Episode Grade: B+

4) 911 (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Moving To ABC

Good news! Even though I’m in season 2, and those people up to date know this already, but two of our lead characters ended up surviving this abusive ex storyline.

Episode Grade: A-

3) unstable (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

i would not be sad at all if Rob Lowe got a surprise Emmy nomination this year for Unstable. he’s great. This whole climbing the tree and falling from the tree bit he does is great.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Beavis and Butthead (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: hopefully Renewed

While the second sketch was funny because the boys were so terrible at throwing, the first part where they got convinced to destroy their own place was hilarious. ButtHead’s response to the eviction notice was that they could keep putting them up, but they couldn’t make him read it. perfect.

Episode Grade: A-

1) The Great (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

The season premiere made me realize that I can’t remember all the supporting cast. However, if we’re being honest, we’re here for Ell Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Huzzah!

Episode Grade: A
