The Too Much TV Roundup- 10/19/23

Yesterday was a mother of a whirlwind. First, i did my happy dance when i saw that Amazon officially renewed Gen-V for a second season. Then, our world crashed down, as the absolutely brilliant The Problem With jon Stewart was cancelled at Apple Plus over “creative differences”. What? Maybe I should cancel Apple Plus and tel them it’s over creative differences. “I’ve decided to go another way.” Someone else had better pick up Jon Stewart ASAP.

8) 8) Dreaming Whilst Black (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

In the second episode, the laughs come mostly from culturally significant moments, like how a Jamaican family may or may not donate to a crowdfunding campaign for a family member. The funniest thing to me, is that in 2023, the pinnacle of black romance that still comes up is Love and Basketball. I wonder how many times this has been brought up before. I love the movie, but it’s funny how there never seem to be great debates about The Best Man, brown Sugar, Two Can Play That Game, or any of the multitude of films from around that same time period. It always comes down to Gina Prince Blythewood’s breakthrough directorial achievement.

Episode Grade: B

7) The Masked Singer (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Probably Renewed

I’m impressed that in Season 10 the show still got someone like this week’s elimination interested in doing the show. A true icon. That’s all i have to say. Someone already in the history books.

Episode Grade: B

6) Celebrity Jeopardy (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

An NBA player I’m unfamiliar with, versus Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine Nine) who really shouldn’t be on Jeopardy, and Steven Weber seeking redemption from his last appearance on the show many years ago.

Episode Grade: B

5) Praise Petey (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

When Petey realizes her cult is basically broke, she figures out a way to try and pay for a prescription medication without recruiting someone and getting them to donate all their money to the church.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Quantum Leap (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Ben can’t even have time to process the Addison bombshell as he must fight… aliens? Yeah, at no point did I think Quantum Leap was going to acknowledge that aliens exist.

Episode Grade: B+

3) The Wheel of Time (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

in the season finale, this show becomes Game Of Thrones by finally showing us a literal dragon. However, Egweyn must first become the master of her master, which was a fantastic scene. I know there was a huge battle, but that scene was my favorite. Matt fulfilling the prophecy…. I felt like he didn’t have enough of that “oh shit” moment. He originally was so against the idea that the future was written for him that he charged into this, without listening, and seemed a little indifferent to the whole thing.A solid season finale.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Harley Quinn (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed?

Harley figures out the truth about Nightwing, and has to battle her baked potato clone to do it. Ivy has to defeat Lex by invoking what she learned from Succession, and then it looks like we are doing The Killing joke, but this shows version of it.

Episode Grade: A

1) One Piece (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

A truly satisfying season finale. it wraps up the season one plot, while also tipping the hat to the possibilities of season 2. Obviously this team got the Cowboy Bebop message that Netflix doesn’t renew all live action anime adaptations, and I appreciate that this did wrap enough of the season 1 themes just in case, while also hinting at adventure in Season 2, which we now get to explore.
