I went into this with way too much hype. I think that was the problem. the reviews were solid, I’m a big fan of Nicole Holofcener, and I was excited to see her reteam with her Enough said lead Julia Louis-Dreyfus, as well as intrigued by the A24 label. hell, I’ve even come to really enjoy Tobias Menzies, and I was excited to see how he would be used here.
Honestly? It’s the only thing I think holofcener has written or directed that hasn’t worked for me. Following the story of a writer (Louis-Dreyfus), who overhears how her husband (Menzies) really feels about the latest thing she’s written, she kinda sorta spirals, but also not really. It’s just a lot of talk, which can be helped and elevated by the cast, which also includes the hilarious Michaela Watkins, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t nearly as engaging or funny as her other films, and while I’d go to bat for any of her previous works, this is the one time I felt empty by the lack of any positive or negative reactions. I guess it is up to the audience to decide.
Laura Post’s audio description was predictably fine, though I’m not sure there’s anything hard to follow here. There was some talk about a specific sweater, or a meal choice, but this film felt like Nicole had run out of steam.
Holofcener will continue to be one of my favorite writer/director combos out there, but I guess even she can’t win them all. If you have a chance, Enough Said is so good, and one of my favorite films. I wish the awards season had been kinder to that movie.
