The Too Much TV Roundup- 12/23/23

Good news for fans of Las Vegas. Not the town, but the early 2000’s series that ran for five seasons with James Caan and Josh Duhmael. It is making its Peacock debut on Friday. No idea if it has audio description. Unlikely, but we might be pleasantly surprised.

1) Neon (Netflix)

Our fledgling reggaeton artist is too star struck to see he’s being used. It’s weird to say that the drug dealing crime lord has a point, but he’s not a gimmick, or a boy toy. And the fact that he would sell out his friends that quickly, not to mention they all sold out Mia super fast, is disconcerting.

Episode Grade: B+

2) Lawmen (Paramount Plus)

Status: Limited?

Bass gets his first assignment, and Donald Sutherland makes his appearance. Honestly, this is a solid series, which seems to be navigating race issues in a very specific way. I’d be interested in general to know how people who don’t look like me feel about the show. Not just conceptually, but how the story is being navigated. It seems like it’s trying to avoid offending anyone.

3) The Other Black Girl (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited?

We finally get a look back at how Hazel came to be, and it is kind of illuminating. This is such a weird show, but with only one episode left, I kind of feel like I know where it is headed.

Episode Grade: A

4) Rick and Morty (Adult Swim)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: renewed (Shooting for 10 seasons)

I watched the first episode of the new season a while back, and while I’m impressed at how close these replacements have gotten, it’s so weird to hear something that close. I feel like I’m listening to someone do a really solid Christopher Walken, but also… it’s not Walken. I think how Solar Opposites handled the change actually was better for the series.

Episode Grade: B-

5) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Narrated By: Heather Foster

Status: Final season

Georgie likes a girl who likes bible study, so Georgie now has to start paying attention. At least a little. No way will I catch up here. I’m in the middle of Season 2, and season 7 starts in February I believe.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Frazier (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Back in the original series, Martin tells someone offhand that he’s gay, so he won’t be set up on a date… but he gets set up anyway. I know this episode doesn’t have audio description, but john Mahoney is fantastic here. he actually did get to play a very similar character in The Broken hearts Club, which was an indie released around the same time. but, when Martin has to pretend Niles is his boyfriend. priceless. yes, I want audio description for this so bad, but this episode made me miss the hell out of the great John Mahoney.

Episode Grade: A+

7) Justified: City Primeval (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

Clement is really underestimating Raylon. However, Willa needs to be shipped off somewhere ASAP. She cannot be trusted. She’s just walking around abandoned warehouses. This girl has no survival instincts, and would be one fo the first to die in a horror film.

Episode Grade: B+

8) Fargo (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

The Jon Hamm season, except he’s also not really the star (at least of the first episode). I wasn’t really pulled in. The thing about Fargo is that since it is an anthology series, every season is different, yet this season opener felt so familiar. It felt a little like we were remaking the film, to some extent, which is what already happened…
