Actually typing out the 29th of February feels like a mistake, until you convince yourself that yesterday was, in fact, Leap Day. So, how did I spend it? With some disappointing audio description. Of course, that means Abbott Elementary (ABC/Hulu), which Disney has apparently just decided to throw down the tubes this season for blind people. If ABC wanted to experiment with whaat seems to be AI generated audio description on every level, perhaps start with not your number one show. Just a thought.
Over on Will Trent (ABC/Hulu), this show did have audio description, but it really felt lacking in the second episode. I mentioned last week that I wasn’t really sure Will Trent ever had great audio description, but now the writer of this is just giving up. Are we training students on ABC shows this year? There’s a scene where Will takes something from a prisoner, which could have at any point mentioned that it was a burner phone, but it leaves that open for interpretation. I think the thing we all have to realize while creating audio description is to not assume. There are a lot of people out there with a lot of different levels of intelligence, or people who have other disabilities including learning ones, that may impede their ability to always leap to all these conclusions that shitty audio description expects us to. Did *I* figure out it was a phone? Sure. Am I convinced everyone figured that out? No. Of course not. I do really like the narrator, and my greatest wish for her is that she abandons Vi-Tech as soon as possible. Unless the pay is twice what you would earn anywhere else, this can’t be worth it to have your voice associated with their level of audio description on both Will Trent and Not Dead Yet.
But, it isn’t just ABC squandering audio description. Over at The Traitors (Peacock) we are given one of the more interesting episodes, as Dr. Will from Big Brother shows up to greet the gang at a castle of horrors. What those horrors are, are likely bugs. You wouldn’t know that from the audio description, because it fails to really talk about any of the creepies. Which bugs? What exactly are they dealing with? one contestant makes a joke about a snake, but were there snakes? This description I’ve mentioned before could be better. As far as the episode itself, it was one where the amount of traitors got reduced, and without spoiling that further, the opportunity to recruit was savage. Become a traitor or die. Would Peter have chosen death the first time around? I wonder. But, the choice here on the second attempt to recruit, is perfect, and I can’t wait to see how that person operates as a traitor.
Griselda (Netflix) has fine audio description, I’m just not that interested in the show. Sofia Vergara is fire though, and it’s nice to see her stick her claim to a serious role like this. Also, I knocked out another episode of Ghosts UK (Paramount Plus), and I promise myself I need to start the new season of American Ghosts ASAP.
Beyond that, I did finish the first season of Silicon Valley (MAX), which has audio description, and saw the gang having to present their idea at a conference. As I’m moving through the week, and listening to audio description tracks, I would say that the my new Top 3 audio described shows, after finishing some since my last ranking are Halo (Paramount Plus), Masters Of The Air (Apple Plus), and perhaps Tracker (Paramount Plus). boy Swallows The Universe (Netflix, Mr and Mrs Smith (Amazon), and maybe Life and Beth (Hulu) would be bubbling under. Down at the bottom, easily Abbott Elementary (Hulu), The Traitors (Peacock), and then a tie for third worst between Choir (Disney Plus)) and Will Trent (Hulu). So, a bottom four really. Not Dead yet (Hulu) would round out a bottom five.
