The Small Screen Diaries: 08/18/25

TV Shows Watched: Black Mirror: S4E2 (Netflix) with audio description, Platonic: S2E3 (Apple Plus) with audio description, Last Week Tonight: Most recent (HBO MAX) no audio description yet

Black Mirror- Archangel. Sadly, not The X-Man, but a program you can install into your child’s brain that will tell you where they are, what their vitals are, allow you to have parental controls to block out troubling things they may encounter in real life, and even see what they see. Rosemarie Dewitt (Untamed) stars. I could see all the problems with this software immediately, and knew where we were headed. However, there are some nice twists, like Archangel coming in handy when Gramps has a heart attack with only a 3 year old at home, or the unpredictability of this girl being really excited to try cocaine. But, otherwise, fairly predictable. It never mentioned anything about the existence of a husband.partner/father/sperm donor/one night stand/immaculate conception, and I think that might have given more color to why Mom is so quick to pull the trigger on using this program. And, I wasn’t really sure what she did for a living. She is seen at work once, and then she’s sleeping with a client. Oh, behave. The audio description had to deal with when the mom was looking through her daughter’s eyes, and what she could see, which it did just fine with.

Platonic- Bachelor Party. Why there are only 3 people at this, when Rogen spent all of Season 1 with a group of guys at the bar he was trying to create, is beyond me. Those guys were even in the season premiere. Instead, we got a new friend “wildcard”. This episode was fine, and the description was too. One time, Rogen’s character gets high and has a very weird wet dream that I thought was described well for being totally nonsensical.

Last Week Tonight- The first and second halves both went after some aspect of the Trump administration, so I liked it, but it will reach that “preaching to the choir” audience. However, he just rips into Senator Kennedy, and that shit is objectively hilarious. I’m thinking if someone ran against him with that compilation of weird shit he’s said over the years, there’s no way he could be reelected. And if the first segment wasn’t enough, Oliver remixed one very specific quote from Kennedy, and turned it into a song.
