The Small Screen Diaries: 09/08/25

TV Shows Watched: Black Mirror: S4E5 (Netflix) with audio description, Platonic: S2E6 (Apple plus) with audio description, The Runarounds: S1E2 (Amazon) with audio description, The Terminal list: Dark Wolf- S1E3 (Amazon) with audio description, My Life With The Walter Boys: S2E3 (Netflix) with audio description, Red Fish Blue fish: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Rick And Morty: S8E1 (HBO MAX) with audio description, Last Week Tonight: Most Recent (HBo MAX) no audio description

Black Mirror- Metalhead is a disappointment. Basically Black mirror made The Terminator, but didn’t flesh out a world interesting enough for it to be in. we don’t know who these people are, or what it is they are stealing, or why, and then at the end, it tries to be sly by showing us what it thinks is a bigger surprise, but really just adds to the fact that this episode is nothing, and has nothing to say. Indie filmmakers make movies like this all the time that end up on Tubi. Nothing to see here. Really solid audio description though. the stuff with the decapitations, tracking chips, and corpses were all done well. But, like the episode Dan Trachtenberg directed in season 3, we’ve just been here and done that.

Platonic- I’m still a fan. I like the cast, and how they play off each other. But, I really dislike what they’ve been doing with the characters the last two episodes. Although, having them drive down the road without a windshield and instead wearing goggles was a fun joke. I’m surprised no one accidentally swallowed an insect.

The Runarounds- the band faces an uncertain future, but they also just got a gig at the state fair. Meanwhile, Wyatt’s mom is very much in the running for “worst mom who doesn’t kill their child”. She’s like right at the bottom, and due in large part to her and Wyatt having little to know backstory. So, that could change, but right now the show has no problem making her seem like a raving lunatic. And Charlie is also kinda creepy, reading that journal, and then turning it into a song. Bruh. His band should have stopped him. He needed an intervention.

The Terminal List: Dark Wolf- The most interesting part for me was the scene between Moe and the daughter of the guy he killed. That was intense. Otherwise, I prefer the original series by a fair margin. Solid audio description though.

My Life With the Walter Boys- Sometimes, I’m not sure why I watch this show. This was one of those episodes. Again with the choices. She didn’t need to sell off her mom’s dresses, and also, who is that girl who rips a dress she hasn’t bought yet? Who are her parents? Who lets her out of the house?

Red Fish, Blue Fish- I was just curious. I might do all five episodes, it is a short season, or I may not. My initial take, for anyone who reads me and is a parent, is that this show felt like the kinds of cartoons I watched in the 4-10 year old bracket. It isn’t what I would call ‘educational”, like the kind of thing you’d want to pair with Sesame Street, nor does it interact like dora The Explorer. It is just a light, inconsequential, non-offensive cartoon inspired by Dr. Seuss. The plot was so thin in the first episode, I honestly don’t think it had one. red Fish and Blue Fish are just the two lead characters that do things. The sweet spot is probably 4-6 year old kids. The audio description was nice, and I liked the narration, but I wonder if for kids if this sparks enough imagination, which was one of the few things Dr Seuss always did for me growing up. The Lorax is my favorite book, but I did want to know how on earth they made a show out of One Fish Two Fish red Fish Blue fish. Now I know.

Rick And Morty- The plus side about waiting an ungodly long time for these episodes to hit HBO MAX was that now they have audio description, by IDC. I’m on Seasonn 8 of this, so I obviously like it. Yes, I can tell the voice actors are different. I don’t really care that much. I think this show is ending soon. Something tells me they were going to either tap out at Season 10, or right before it. But, I’ve watched episodes without, and having audio description certainly gave way more context.

Last Week Tonight- John Oliver dissects Trump’s assault on higher education, and penchant for blackmailing universities.
