The Small Screen Diaries: 05/13/26

Netflix just went nuts yesterday at their upfront. They did announce some new shows, but they also announced some renewals, including an early Season 4 renewal for My Life With The Walter Boys, an expected pickup for the 11th season of Love Is Blind, a 3rd season of Quarterback, a somewhat surprising vote of confidence for Running Point for its 3rd season even after a ratings dip, and a 2nd season of Big Mistakes as Dan Levy also inks a development deal with Netflix. Sadly, they also confirmed that the upcoming fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer will be its last.

TV Shows Watched: Witch Hat Atelier : S1E4 (CrunchyRoll) with audio description, The Testaments: S1E8 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Widows Bay: S1E1 (Apple) with audio description, DTF: St Louis: S1E7 (HBO MAX) with audio description, Young Sherlock: S1E3 (Amazon) with audio description, and Hacks: S5E2 (HBO MAX) with audio description

Witch Hat Atelier- Coco enters a lesson on runes, only to attract attention from what appears to be the villainous witches of the series. The magic is strong with Coco, but why is this faction uniquely interested in her? CrunchyRoll has TTS AD for this which is written very well, using a pleasant neutral AI voice that leans on the higher end of AI voices. They also avoid audio ducking.

The Testaments- Agnes learns a secret from Hilda, and uses her as a canary in a coal mine, in an episode narrated from Agnes’s point of view. Daisy’s curtains come down, and Shunemite is surprisingly helpful, though laughs when Daisy tries to explain sex to cheer her up. The girls matches are all revealed, and Becca’s engagement party makes her father’s victims uncomfortable. Probably the best moment of audio description comes as they note how each of these girls are always submissively looking down in their interactions with anyone but themselves.

Widow’s Bay- Matthew Rhys’s new spooky dark comedy is a blast. The first episode had me hooked. I have no idea where this is headed, or how concerned I need to be over the fog, but by the end of the pilot, you get a strong sense of structure, theme, characters, voice, and can easily decide if you want to pursue more. Yes, it has potential to get more serious, more scary, even gory if it really wants. Right now, it has strong vibes of Shining Veil, for anyone familiar with that. The audio description was fine, but it might have some heavy lifting to do, as the fog appears to be something we have to pay attention to.

Young Sherlock- I love the combination of Sherlock and Moriarty for a change, and Colin Firth is shady as hell. Already renewed.

DTF St Louis- Well, that was a strange journey. I’m not sure if I will review this, but that certainly was a choice in the end. They justified it, but the road we took to get here was unpleasant. There’s so much talent here, and I’m not sure this vibe they were going for actually worked, especially given the ending. I have no problems with the audio description though. Alana is lovely. The AD is well written. The actual show, is a hard recommend for me.

Hacks- Deborah learns she’s been neglecting her fans. She has a moment with one fan, that really hits her, and it hit me as well. Surprisingly. Meanwhile, Ava celebrates her birthday, and Jimmy gets to meet someone he actually fanboys over. Good luck managing that career.

Say Something!
