The Small Screen Diaries: 05/26/26

TV Shows Watched: Man On Fire: S1E2 (Netflix) with audio description, Scarpetta: S1E1 (Amazon) with audio description, Sunny Nihgts: S1E3 (Disney Plus) with audio description, St Dennis Medical: S2E8 (Peacock) with audio description, DMV: S1 E Christmas (Paramount) with audio description, SNL: Harry Styles (Peacock) with audio description, and Abbott Elementary: S5E17 (Disney Plus) with audio description

Man On Fire- Really like this audio description. The action scenes are well described and it compliments the tension of the show. Like the piranha juice sequence, where we are waiting to see if it reaches the eye, it keeps the tension going. The series is pretty good, but it hasn’t been picked up for a second season yet. I didn’t love the film, and the series allows for a deeper exploration of the plot, plus they aged up the girl.

Scarpetta- Finally getting around to starting this. A solid pilot, introducing the characters. I’m not familiar with Patricia Cornwell’s source material. Blumhouse is producing, which concerns me in terms of quality, but it all seems fine for this type of show told across two timelines. The AD tracks a lot of the same things Kidman does as Scarpetta, and her younger counterpart (Rosie McEwen).

Sunny Nights- My least favorite on this list. The Aussie AD is fine, though I paid half attention, and looked at my phone a lot. Why this isn’t a half-hour show is beyond me. Even Bill Hader’s darkly comedic Barry knew it wasn’t supposed to be an hour long show. This drags.

St Dennis Medical- Of the sitcoms, has slightly better audio description than Abbott, though this genre suffers like game shows, reality competition series, and some other structures that don’t lend well to robust audio description. Luckily, the show is creatively strong and cracks me up.

DMV- I’m so far behind. I must be the reason it was cancelled. This was the Christmas party episode. DMV was stronger than CBS gave it credit for, though ratings wise, it was the weakest of the four, even if it did improve the timeslot over last year’s Papa’s House.

SNL- This AD track is fire. I love that she tracked all the times the cast was unintentionally cracking up at their own jokes. Harry Styles was pretty funny, and James Austin Johnson doing Trump is always great. I did really love the emoji bit.

Abbott Elementary- Probably the weakest AD. I had to remind someone online that Vito is indeed a human, and this show is not being narrated by a robot. Though, when you tread into territory where people start thinking you are bad AI, it’s time to rethink some life choices. I don’t know why Vito is on sitcoms. His voice is uncomfortably dry.
