The Small Screen Diaries: 06/05/26

In Every Generation… there is a Giles. Actor Anthony Stewart Head, best known for his role as Buffy’s watcher Giles across seven seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and also known to fans of Ted Lasso, and to Brits for his start as the Prime Minister on Little Britain, which actually jumpstarted career opportunities for him in comedy. Although Buffy was being rebooted at Hulu, until being unceremoniously killed off by a random Hulu executive, Anthony Head was not involved in the reboot.

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory- Somewhat free of my constraints of cramming in titles for voting, I went back to things I hadn’t seen in a while. I’m still working through the final season of Chaos Theory, because why not? It isn’t like my viewership will get it a fifth season. No rush. Still adore this show, and the franchise, and the best part about this audio description is that instead of painstakingly trying to describe every dinosaur, it makes sure they are all correctly labeled, so if you have a kid watching who is interested in dinosaurs, it will create that spark in them to learn more. The things description can’t tell a kid, like if a dinosaur is a carnivore or herbivore, how tall it is, or which period it came from. Descriptive Video Works produced the track, narrated by Paula Hoffman.

Your Friends And Neighbors- At the end of Season 1, I started to see promise in this show, and I’m still seeing the glimmers, especially as James Marsden expands his role. Jon Hamm made it look like January Jones could act in Mad Men, so perhaps he can do that for Amanda Peet. The AD here is pretty good, and I certainly didn’t feel left behind.

Solar opposites- Another one of my favorites coming to an end, which I hadn’t watched in a minute. Terry didn’t have enough maturity to save the family, so he injects maturity to hilarious effect, and the wall people need The Duke if they are going to get out alive.Dave Wallace does the track, and it is probably my favorite thing of his that he’s done. He so seamlessly fits into the vibe of the show.

Ghosts- Another one. Not in its final season, but it had a multi-year renewal, and was already coming back for Season 6, so I was less worried. This episode had Jay’s sister thinking about being proposed to, but found a creative way to make that even more emotionally resonant. This show has one of the best ensembles on TV, and it is so frustrating to see how it keeps getting ignored by Emmy voters.Media Access Group does the audio description.

Invincible- The titula hero has to work with Satan, or an even worse enemy will rise and destroy humanity. Was this the jump the shark moment for Invincible?

RJ Decker- David Zayas looks to be recurring here, which would easily make me more interested in this show. In fact, I’d rather they cancel this, and just write a show for Zayas, who is such a reliable supporting player, it is about time to see him as the lead detective. I’m thinking this show is using AI. IT’s Verb It, and the audio description, while not the worst I’ve ever heard was the weakest, and this show has ducking. I’m flagging AI on the play.

Breaking Bad- Walt is nervous about his future, and seeks to secure it permanently. Jesse once again can’t cope, and turns to drugs, and Mike seems to be dealing with the stress of his job by drinking it away. Descriptive Video Works did the audio description here also, but with Diane Newman as the narrator. Great stuff.
