The Electric State

The Electric State (Netflix)- Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie Years ago I remember when Robopocalypse was being kicked around as a potential summer blockbuster, based on a best-selling novel. I believe Spielberg was actually interested at one time, but likely became more interested in ready Player One. Sometimes it is a blessing in disguise to not have your book turned into a film. I loved the ready Player One book, but not the film. Robopocalypse likely dodged a bullet. What didn’t dodge the bullet is the Electric State. While I have not read the source material, … Continue reading The Electric State

It Could Happen To You: 30th Anniversary

It Could Happen To You: 30th Anniversary- Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, Rosie Perez Quick Take: this romantic comedy is something I have seen more times than what I would have originally predicted. I’d say I’m between 4 and 7. It is just a simple high concept comedy about a nice cop (Nicholas Cage) who tries to do good deeds, and ends up pledging to share his lottery winnings with an out of luck waitress (Bridget Fonda) when he can’t give her a tip. Turns out, it is a winning ticket, but his wife (Rosie Perez) isn’t so quick to share. … Continue reading It Could Happen To You: 30th Anniversary

Conclave

Conclave- Is This One Of The Best Of The Year? Just two years ago, a director I was unfamiliar with made my best film of 2022. I see tons of films, every year, but in 2022, nothing quite stuck with me like the harrowing All Quiet On The Western Front remake. Oscar voters agreed, as the movie received a Best Picture nomination, and won is several categories. It stands as one of Netflix’s best audio description tracks, and certainly as an example of why they should continue to embrace more audio description for international content. Cut two years ahead, and … Continue reading Conclave

The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/22/23

Yesterday, I had the awesome opportunity to attend a panel at the American Concil of the Blind’s virtual conference presented by the Audio Description Project that featured reps from the major streaming services, all of whom came to talk about just how committed they are, without actually putting a number on that commitment. I’m committed to cleaning my room. When? How often? I’m committed. So I didn’t watch as many shows. But on the plus side, hulu is moving forward with a second season of nine Perfect Strangers, which should be fun since they already used all the strangers from … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/22/23

The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/15/23

In the slow world of TV news, networks are starting to assume that they won’t have scripted programs for the Fall, and are once again leaning on reality series. NBC just ordered a new Wild Kingdom show for the fall. So instead of watching the OneChicago lineup, you get the same thing you’d get with any other nature documentary. 12) Trophy Wife (Hulu) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended This one is tough, because I basically enjoyed everything I watched yesterday. Trophy Wife doesn’t have audio description, and some of the moments were a bit cringe. The kids were working on … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/15/23

The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/21/23

Well, that Disney/Hulu pull list I mentioned earlier got a little shorter as the internet clapped back about one title Disney was planning on purging, the documentary Howard, which centers around the composer Howard Ashman who was instrumental in the revival of Disney, starting with The little Mermaid. Not only did it seem in poor taste to remove a documentary about an LGBT icon right before pride month, but also right before the live action adaptation of his work hits the big screen. So, Howard will not be pulled. 13) Great Expectations (Hulu) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Limited Series … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/21/23

I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Where I Watched It: iTunes VOD English Audio Description?: No Well, in case you are wondering why Naomi Aoki didn’t make my Top 10 Actress list, this should clear things up. Sony decided that they wanna dance with someone, but they’d prefer it if that person was sighted. So, sadly, the VOD release of this film doesn’t include AD, either on iTunes or Amazon. I had heard this movie was a lot of music anyway, so i figured I’d give my perspective. I’m impressed the film “went there” as much as it did. It explores quite honestly and openly Whitney’s … Continue reading I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Jolt

Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Jai Courtney, Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale, Laverne Cox, David Bradley, and Susan Sarandon. Directed By: Tonya Wexler Where I Watched It: Amazon English Audio Description Available?: Yes Is This Robodescription?: Yes The Plot: Tale as old as time. It’s been done so many times before. A women (Beckinsale) is diagnosed with a very particular set of skills (the skill being uncontrollable rage), and the solution suggested by her doctor (Tucci), who obviously is a big fan of Crank, is for her to wear a device where she sends an electric shock to her heart before she loses … Continue reading Jolt

The Best Of 2021

With the Oscar’s swiftly approaching, and my Oscar final predictions released yesterday, it’s finally time to discuss who i think actually should have been nominated in the major categories, and who I would vote to win. This list will be completely different than the Oscar list, because I am just myself, I have no guild or board of people to mess up my nomination process, and my awards mean nothing. No actor is sitting out there waiting with bated breath to see if they will be included on Mac The Movieguy’s Best of 2021. Which is great for me, because … Continue reading The Best Of 2021
