The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/21/23

Well, that Disney/Hulu pull list I mentioned earlier got a little shorter as the internet clapped back about one title Disney was planning on purging, the documentary Howard, which centers around the composer Howard Ashman who was instrumental in the revival of Disney, starting with The little Mermaid. Not only did it seem in poor taste to remove a documentary about an LGBT icon right before pride month, but also right before the live action adaptation of his work hits the big screen. So, Howard will not be pulled.

13) Great Expectations (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited Series

In the fourth episode, while I thought there were some solid imagery moments involving Miss havisham, I was pretty bored. I acknowledge that staying awake became a challenge, which makes it impossible to really rank this above anything else that I was wide awake for.

12) Clarissa Explains It All (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

While my mid-life crisis is involving watching shows from back in the day, not only am i missing out on the visuals due to there being no audio description, the show just feels so incredibly dated. There were definitely a couple of casual jokes thrown in here that wouldn’t hold up in 2023, especially in a kids show.Clarissa was getting ready for picture day, and i totally forgot she had any other friends other than Sam.

11) 8 Simple Rules (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Carrie goes out for cheerleading, and this somehow sustained the plot of an entire episode.

10) The Golden Girls (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

So, at some point in the few years I’ve been slowly making my way through this program, audio description happened. I honestly haven’t been checking every episode, because I didn’t imagine Hulu would prioritize an older title, but it’s there. At least at the end of Season 5, I had audio description. However, it was still mostly a clip show, and it ended up featuring a guy doing an awful impersonation of Bush Sr.

9) Family Matters (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

I’m still waitin for that shift. You know, that TGIF feel where the kids became more important than the adults, and Urkel takes over. Still no Urkel.

8) 911 (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Moving To ABC

After the devastation of the earthquake, Chimney is still working through some issues on his end.

Episode Grade: B

7) Futurama (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

While the honeymooners joke is solid, this show is hard to follow the jokes without audio description. Although, sometimes Bender makes up for a lot.

6) Agent Elvis (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I’m hoping Netflix sticks with this. it could really turn into something if given the time and space. It has the blessing of Priscilla, and some really talented voice cast. It continues to grow on me.

5) My Kind Of Country (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Actually, this show is a great example of how audio description can be incorporated into these reality singing competition shows. There’s really no excuse. This is a singing competition, and it has audio description. So the fact that long time hits American Idol and The Voice continue to ignore it is frustrating. This is a bit lower this week, as once again, I very much did not see eye to eye with the judges. Camille should have stayed.

4) Citadel (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Citadel is an odd duck. I feel like Amazon has followed a very similar concept before with much success. Here, the pilot didn’t initially grab me as Richard Madden clearly is having a Jason Bourne moment. there’s a lot of exposition in the middle, to explain the world this show lives in, and it’s actually necessary. One of the things I found weaker about the plot was how we were just dropped in, with no knowledge of what was going on, and then given information piece by piece, yet there was never a larger explanation of anything. For being the co-lead, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas disappears for most of the pilot. And suddenly Stanley Tucci is a badass.

3) So Help Me Todd (CBS/Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

in the season finale, we oddly wrapped up all these storylines in nice little packages, and I was so confused. This got a second season renewal a long time ago, why was there so much closure? Then, in the final scene, there was that little twist. I don’t know if the twist was enough, but I guess we have to see what their plans for it in Season 2 are.

2) UnPrisoned (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I think we are supposed to like Kerry Washington’s character, but Delroy Lindo is just killing it. Watching his concern over his douchebag boss exerting asinine control, until he finally figures out a way to do something about it, was far more interesting than Washington’s neurosis.

1) Succession (HBo)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

Following the events of episode 3, we get to see more of Marsha (Hiam Abass) as well as a lot of posturing from the Waystar family as they try and convince one another they are the best to lead. My favorite moment was when Greg thought it might be him. I thought the response to Tom had been pretty great, but nothing quite beat the response to Greg.
