Goodbye World

Starring: Adrien Grenier, Benjamin McKenzie, Kerry Bishe, Mark Webber, Caroline Dhavernas, Gaby Hoffman, Scott Mescudi, Remy Nozik, Mckenna Grace.

A while back, I watched an “apocalypse comedy” called It’s A Disaster. It was underwhelming, but had some moments. Goodbye World trades in much of the comedy for much better character development. I think this would have done better in theatres if given a small chance. I know that sometimes films that dance between genres are hard to sell. It’s not quite a drama, it’s definitely not a comedy, and it’s not suspenseful enough to be a thriller.

The film outlines a world in which a calculated cyber attack destroys the power grid, and throws the world into chaos. I realize that all of these types of films rely on the assumption that without power, we all turn into mindless animals. Luckily James (Grenier) and Lily (Bishe) live off the grid already with their daughter. No, they’re not Harry Potter’s parents. But as shit hits the fan, their friends start to show up for sanctuary. Nick (McKenzie) is Lily’s Ex, and James’s best friend, and he’s there with his new wife (Dhavernas). Laura (Hoffman) is an ex political mastermind, and Benji (Webber), an ex political terrorist.

Then the world collapses, and our gang fights a bit. The acting is pretty good across the board, but no one delivers a stand out performance. There aren’t any big explosive moments, or defining scenes to really create them. It’s a very quiet movie, for the most part. I suppose it could go deeper, and it could be darker, but do we need more dark apocalypse movies? Can’t there just be smaller movies about a group of people?

If you’re looking for a simple movie that explores human relationships in tough situations, then you’ll enjoy this.

FINAL GRADE: B

  1. Hi i just saw this the other day, i was amazed on how many recognizable actors it had, i had never heard of this movie,it had some good elements and some bad ones, but you i think what hurt this movie the most was a lack of budget, and good direction. The actors are talented and can give a better performance, i think if better directed, also the dialogue wasn’t very good
