Actor Profile: Steve Carell

Steve Carell is one of a few actors that can get me into the theatre just because they’re in the film. I think he’s underrated as a dramatic actor too, as he’s shown some incredible talent in Little Miss Sunshine, Crazy Stupid Love, The Way Way Back, Dan In Real Life, and recently Foxcatcher. My first contact with Carell was when he was the voice of Gary in the Ambiguously Gay Duo on SNL, but his first big film role (and breakout performance) was Bruce Almighty. But, it was The 40 Year Old Virgin that really turned him into a film star.

I mean, he was great in Foxcatcher, and it was totally different, but I honestly think Little Miss Sunshine was the performance that used Steve Carell to his fullest possibilities. Not only was it dark and serious, but it also gave him a few opportunities to be funny. Though, Foxcatcher was great too.

He’s definitely best known for The Office, but really he’s also known as the voice of Gru in Despicable Me, and probably also as Brick in Anchorman, since his character really became the breakout of that series.

I don’t think people realize how good he was in Dan In Real Life, or how funny he actually was in Dinner For Schmucks because people often write those films off.

I’ve really seen almost every single performance of his worth mentioning. I hear he’s good in the upcoming Freeheld, so I’ll choose that.

His worst film is probably Bewitched, but I also didn’t really like what they did to his Evan Baxter character in Evan Almighty. It’s sort of what I always assumed would happen to Dwight if he actually got his own spinoff.
