Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse is bred from the same childish humor that failed Hot Tub Time Machine 2 earlier this year. Crude jokes about tits and vaginas, hoping that the shock value of these are funny in their own merit. Unfortunately, these jokes have all been done a thousand times already, and are no longer shocking enough to be funny. You have to remember, it was 1997 when Cameron Diaz used Ben Stiller’s sperm to give herself a hairstyle change in There’s Something About Mary. It’s been almost 20 years of really crude humor, and dick jokes just don’t cut it anymore. While I didn’t find it to be the funniest film of the year, I did think it was a lot of fun, in the way zombie films should be. It didn’t really take itself too seriously, much like Shaun Of The Dead. But, it’s not Shaun Of The Dead.
It’s a shame that the studio didn’t have a bit more faith in Scouts Guide, because I think a whole lot of video game nerds would have enjoyed this. What the film lacks in humor, it makes up for in unique ways to kill zombies. It’s a little like Zombieland, in that matter. As a zombie comedy, it works well, just remember this is really sophomoric humor. The cast is alright, though I don’t expect to see much from Logan Miller or Joey Morgan in the future. Neither of them really are exciting enough that they’ll spark a casting frenzy. Plus, this film bombed. I’d imagine that Sarah Dumont and Halston Sage will continue to be cast in roles that require them to be really hot. Tye Sheridan is flexing his action star muscle a bit in anticipation for him to play Cyclops in the next X-Men movie, so there’s that.
I enjoyed this more than I probably should have. I know that’s a weird thing to say, because I can acknowledge that this really isn’t a stellar quality movie. It’s kinda campy, really crude, and doesn’t really deserve your time. But if you’re part of the niche audience that likes zombie films, or more specifically zombie comedies, I think you’ll enjoy it. I think, because I am part of that group, I enjoyed it more than I should have. So, take my grade with a grain of salt.
