Box Office Predictions: ‘Ghost’ ‘Baby’ Can’t Defeat ‘Beast’

Two new releases enter this weekend, and I think both will be slightly disappointing. I was waiting for the Rotten Tomatoes scores to start coming in for Ghost In The Shell, and it is barely fresh. I think it will struggle to find eyes this weekend, opposite several heavy hitters still in theatres. Scarlett Johansson hasn’t had many opportunities to flex her muscle as a leading lady, and she’s the only recognizable face being pushed in the trailers. This is all on her, and I know they’re hoping the nerds will come out, and fans of the anime… but lets be honest… that’s a limited crowd. Yes, she did open Lucy to 43M, but I don’t think this is Lucy. I think it gets beat this weekend by The Boss Baby, which is NOT getting good reviews. The Boss Baby has a different problem, which is finding family audiences against Beauty and the Beast and Power Rangers. Those poor reviews will hurt its growth potential.

That means people will still be catching up on films like Kong: Skull Island, Logan, and Get Out, all which will have slight drops as the new competition isn’t looking to be too distracting. Also opening, The Zookeeper’s Wife, which I don’t think will crack the top 10 in 450 screens. It’s an Oscar bait type film being banished to March with a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Next weekend, Smurfs: The Lost Village hopes to make a difference against a sea of family films (again, poor timing), as well as Going In Style and The Case For Christ. Basically, we’re clearing the field for the following weekend when The Fate Of The Furious opens against something called Spark, which I honestly had to look up info on. Open Road really is letting that film die. Of course, it’s ANOTHER kids film, and we just do NOT need any more in the marketplace right now.

1) Beauty and the Beast- 45M Weekend, 395M Total
2) The Boss Baby- 25M Weekend, 25M Total
3) Ghost In The Shell- 20M Weekend, 20M Total
4) Power Rangers- 18M Weekend, 71M Total
5) Kong: Skull Island- 8M Weekend, 148M Total
6) Life- 7M Weekend, 25M Total
7) Logan- 6M Weekend, 212M Total
8) Get Out- 5.5M Weekend, 157M Total
9) CHIPS- 3.5M Weekend, 14M Total
10) The Shack- 2M Weekend, 53M Total

  1. You actually make it seem really easy along with your presentation but I to find this matter to be actually one thing which I think I might never understand. It kind of feels too complicated and very huge for me. I am looking ahead on your subsequent put up, I will try to get the dangle of it!

  2. F*ckin’ tremendous issues here. I am very happy to look your article. Thanks a lot and i’m looking forward to contact you. Will you please drop me a mail?
