I did use a chunk of my day to watch the January 6th hearings, so less actual TV was watched. Though, this would still seem like a lot of shows to a normal person anyway.
1) Woke (Hulu)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
Any misgivings I may have had with Woke moving in a slightly different direction for its second season were wiped out in the last two episodes, which culminated in The project finally being able to distance itself from the 5G sneakers, and course correcting by swapping out all the shoes for the uh-housed population. The season wrapped up nicely, tying together all of the plot elements, while also setting our characters onto new paths for a third season, should Hulu not abandon one of its creative gems. I’m not holding my breath, but perhaps more people watch Woke than I think. If this is a series finale, then they still went out on a nice note.
Episode Grade: A, Season 2 Grade: A-
2) Outer Range (Amazon)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
This show is progressively pulling me in more and more. As the show gets weirder it keeps throwing more interesting propositions into the fire. For example, who was that man with the pet crow? Why was he all of a sudden talking about finding mastodons in caves? Why would an entire mountain disappear and reappear? So many really crazy things thrown into the mix. And every time Will Patton yells for a Clamato, I laugh. Like, that’s his drink of choice. Fucking Clamato. Outer Range is shaping up to be great.
Episode Grade: A
3) Last Week Tonight (HBO MAX)
English Audio Description Available? No
This weeks episode pushed for tech regulations on big monopolies. I’ve always had different thoughts about each one of the companies. I’ve never understood the Apple thing, because they don’t have the dominant market share. They don’t sell the most computers, notoriously most computers run on windows. Apple IPhones make up around a third of the market, while Android doubles that. I also actually like how Apple runs their store, because I’ve never downloaded an app with a virus before, but I know Android users who have. He made some good points, but I’m not actually sold. Props for that montage on Sean Hannity’s obsession with saying Adam Schiff’s name.
Episode Grade: A
4) Minx (HBOMAX)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
In the Season 1 Finale, Joyce and Doug are reunited when a wife gets revenge on her husband and he decides to file a suit against Minx blaming them for an article they published on Marital Rape. Heavy stuff for a sitcom, but it is also a reminder of what the 70’s used to be like, and how disposable women were. Stay in the home and make a casserole. The historic context of Minx has always been one of it’s strongest suits, while creating a cast that has potential to become memorable moving forward. I’m optimistic about season two, based on where season one leaves us.
Episode Grade: A-, Season 1 Grade: B+
5) The Girl From Plainville (Hulu)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
In the final episode (thank you Jeebus!) this “should have been a Lifetime Movie wraps up by FINALLY getting to the guilty result, but not before spending half the episode showing us Coco’s last day, and also a fantasy world that Michelle seems to imagine in her head. Maybe she does realize the gravity of the situation. I don’t know. Why don’t you go ask her? She’s been out of jail since January 2020, didn’t even serve a full 15 month sentence. She got released early for good behavior. Having watched eight episodes of this, I’m convinced we could have done this in less time.
Episode Grade: B, Series Grade: B
6) Tokyo Vice (HBo MAX)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
God. This show is the definition of slow burn. At times, it can be interesting, and it can hit you with a ton of bricks. But at the same time, it moves like molasses, until it doesn’t. I know they’re trying to make a series out of something that would have made a terrific movie, which requires stretching out the story and fleshing out characters. But knowing that there’s a second season on the horizon is both a blessing and a curse right now.
Episode Grade: C+
7) Life And Beth (Hulu)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
I need someone to explain to me how this john character is still in the show. How he’s still a romantic love interest for Amy Schumer’s character. Is he like super hot? Did she see his penis and go OMG? He’s beyond obnoxious, and every episode he remains her main focus, it is killing this series. On the other hand, he would be a funny character in a different show, but these two have zero chemistry. They don’t match. He’s far too weird, pulling carrots out of his pants and eating them like he just carries carrots (and apples) on him at all times. Why on earth… WHY? I do not understand this show, I don’t understand why this guy, and I love Amy Schumer. Dare I say, I Feel PRetty is better than Life and Beth? Prove me wrong.
