A few more shows today. Unfortunately, you won’t like my rankings.
8) Miss Scarlett and the Duke (PBS)
English Audio Description?: No?
It’s probably just me, but this show never has audio description, nor does anything on PBS. I’d love to know where all their audio description ends up, but that’s life. I’m starting to get to a point where my tolerance for non-described content is starting to be affected. Sure, a few shows remain at the top, and some I keep watching because they’ve been on so long that I was watching them pre-blindness, but that’s not the case here. This is the only thing I find interesting on PBS, and I wish it had audio description. i was asleep before the end.
Final Grade: C+
7) The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
You’ve seen me knock other shows down a peg on bad episodes, and Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t escape that. While the first 3/4ths of this episode were perfection, as Serena and June navigated their long time coming contentious relationship, it actually seemed to be largely centered around June moving into a different emotional state. The flashbacks were centered around experiences June had, not Serena. So when June ultimately decides to help Serena with something she never thought she would do, it’s a clear choice. There’s a peace that seems to finally hit June in moments of this episode, peace she seemingly has never found before. So I hated the way the episode ended, because it was just like a train wrecked into a building. After convincing Serena that they needed medical help, and likely having to trek a while to get it, she gets Serena in a hospital so she and her baby can have actual medical attention. Serena came a long way this episode, and I figured the writers room was going to use her for information. By showing her kindness, and protecting her and her baby, June stood to gain a lot of insider information, but all of that was flushed down the toilet when Luke teleported into existence, with this “They let me go, and I still ahve the flash drive” nonsense that felt so lazy, and then it turned out that the rules of Canada meant Serena could never leave her little facility Luke got condemned so she’s an illegal immigrant. The final moments had June, who was finally at peace, destroyed by her own husband, running to find out what was happening to Serena, and then just turning around to Luke like “Cool.” It’s one of the worst written episodes of the show. I’ve wanted Serena to get what was coming to her, but not at the expense of June finding a shred of peace. Now the whole thing is just a jumbled mess, like someone spent a lot of time building a lego model, only at the last moment to have a toddler run in and kick all the pieces apart. The writers room at The Handmaid’s Tale really needs to take a harder look at what it is that they are doing.
Episode Grade: B- (If they had never made it to the hospital, it would have been an A)
6) History 101 (Netflix
English Audio Description?: Yes
if you’ve ever wanted to learn about how bottled water is destroying the earth, like you somehow missed the memo, then this episode is for you. I felt like, other than having some exact numbers thrown at me, there wasn’t a lot here I didn’t already know. They even talked about the Fiji Water thing, but not the other controversy involving people protesting drinking the water bottled in Fiji from that aquifer when Fiji as a country doesn’t have clean drinking water.
Episode Grade: B
5) Celebrity Jeopardy (ABC/Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
So, this show makes me feel so so smart. These questions are so much easier than traditional Jeopardy. But also, the questions are really easy, which makes it even worse when your favorite actors have no clue what is going on.
Episode Grade: B+
4) Quantum Leap (NBC/Peacock)
English Audio Description?: No
The Cock didn’t have English AD as a track when i watched this yesterday. So, a point taken off from an episode where they started to find out more about who the other leaper (now being called Leaper X) might be.
Episode Grade: B+
3) Archer (FX/ Hulu)
English Audio Description?: no
A rather entertaining episode had Lana and Archer (on his day off of all things) trying to protect The Broker, while Lana is supposed to also be spending time with AJ. Meanwhile, it turns out AJ has inherited the best of her parents, and is a badass preteen that spends half the episode beating up Cyril.
Episode Grade: A-
2) East New York (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Not a good sign for the future that just as the show is getting off the ground creatively, a bunch of showrunners/producers exit. But, this already shot episode was solid. The main storyline featured a man who works with explosives for a living barricading himself in his apartment, with a hostage, and how carefull the squad has to handle the situation. The B-Plot was equally interesting, as Bentley’s car doesn’t start and he needs to get to role call, so he borrows his dad’s Maserati to get to work. But, he’s pulled over for driving while black, and when he confronts the officer who hasn’t called to check his credentials, the officer restrains him with force, and pulls his gun, finally arresting Bentley. That racist cop fuels the rest of that plot, as does Bentley’s resilience in mmaking sure he is reported.
Episode Grade: A
1) The outlaws (Amazon)
English Audio Description?: Yes
I think this might be the series finale? They kind of wrapped up the storylines, but they did leave some plots with questions that could be resolved in a third season, but don’t necessarily need to. I do really enjoy this show, and I’d be here for a third season, but that was also a pretty great way to end the series if that is what happens. Either way, a great final hour, season or series.
