The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/19/23

Spotted. Dumpster fire of a streaming service cancels popular show. ZOZO, RIP, Gossip Girl.

I didn’t watch much TV yesterday. Sorry.

4) his Dark Materials (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m at the point where after a few episodes into the third season, I’m not even sure I care if I finish. Perhaps if I had read Phillip Pullman’s books, but I’m so far behind on TV, and this show is dumping religious allegories on me, talking about whether or not Ruth Wilson’s character can be let into the Heaven stand in, and how the original creator isn’t even paying attention to anything anymore, and everything is just being run by some angel… it’s all just like a big WTF. This would work better as a miniseries, or a series that didn’t take multiple years in between. But I’m not going back and rewatching this just to find some enjoyment. Some day, now that the show is complete, a person will binge watch this and find it’s brilliance, I’m sure. That person just is not me.

Episode Grade: C+

3) The Rookie Feds (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m going to start a drinking game. Or something. It will be tied into how long into the episode before she mentions that she was a guidance counselor, and no matter how absurd that relevance may be, the show will convince you that it is very relevant. I’m sure the season finale will find our characters in a room looking to disarm a nuke, and Niecy Nash will step forward and be like “I got this. I was a guidance counselor.” I’m half hoping ABC cancels this just so I don’t feel the need to keep up with it so that when The Rookie has a crossover, which they frequently do, I have to watch and understand both shows.

Episode Grade: C+

2) The Midnight Club (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Man, that season/series finale was underwhelming. I mean, they finished their stories, and there was a hint of mystery at the end of the episode, but I think the finale was my least favorite episode.

Episode Grade: B+

1) The Daily Show With Leslie jones (Comedy Central)

English Audio Description?: no

So, I know she’s not The permanent host, and she would be a lot to take every single day on every single topic, and not every joke landed for me, but I already enjoy her more than Trevor Noah who mostly bored me to tears. Her bit on George Santos at the top had me dying. Nice John Wick reference. I do plan on checking out at least one episode from every guest host so see what their flavor of the show might be like. Jones is an improvement upon Noah, because she has a ton of energy, and she did dial it back a lot in that Planned Parenthood segment, but I just don’t know if she’d get me to jump back in like I used to with Jon Stewart. I love Leslie, but she only goes to eleven.

Episode Grade: B+
