Best of 2022: Top 10 Adapted Screenplays

These are my top 10 Adapted Screenplays of 2022. All ten of these films I was able to watch with audio description, even if a chunk were rented on demand.

10) Women Talking

9) Top Gun Maverick

8) After Yang

7) She Said

6) Marvel The Shell With Shoes On

5) The Batman

4) The Black Phone

3) Glass Onion

2) Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio

1) All Quiet On The Western Front

When I got down to the final two, i kept flipping them back and forth. What Del Toro managed to do with Pinocchio, really making it feel like his own adaptation that seemed impossible in a year where two other Pinocchio adaptations already existed is amazing. The fact that we got to meet Carlo was so effective, and basing the film in an actual war, and putting Mussolini front and center was brilliant. But, i haven’t been able to stop thinking about the horrific scenes throughout All Quiet On The Western Front, something that could easily be written off as unnecessary. the book is a classic, the film won Best Picture some 90 years ago, so why bother? Because the urgency, the perspective, and the message is so relevant today more than ever. The haunting story of soldiers lost for nothing, while those negotiated terms from the safety of a train, is an incredible and powerful film, and my selection for Best Adapted Screenplay.
