So, the next week of this might seem a little sparse. It’s Oscar week, and I’m not going to cram as much TV into this coming week, instead, I’m trying to rewatch a few things, and maybe cram in a final film or two. Some shows will just have to take a week off from the roundup. Don’t worry, I still plan on getting some heavy hitters on this list. But, this is what I managed yesterday.
7) The Company You Keep (ABC)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Poor Milo. I know he thinks he left This Is us and transitioned into the next big thing, but this show is way more confusing than it needs to be, and in a day and age where most dramas are spinoffs of other shows, the originality this show is attempting to bring just isn’t presented in a strong enough or compelling way to get it to stand out. I’m not bailing after the first episode, but bailing certainly seems in the cards. It reminded me a bit too much of some other shows that tried to break the mold and failed. It’s really hard to do that successfully.
Episode Grade: C+
6) Mayor Of Kings Town (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Jeremy Renner is still running around trying to make this show work. Sometimes, this show is so dark and bleak, and frequently has a habit of not featuring Dianne Wiest nearly enough for someone who has second billing. She needs to be featured like a co-lead, and it would take a lot of stress off of Renner running around playing Mike like a traveling juggling act of doom.
Episode Grade: B-
5) The Best Man: The Final Chapters (Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
A show that started off high on my list continues to drop because Lance is so gross. I’m now at the point where it’s affecting my ability to take the rest of the cast seriously, or even care about them. It’s like finding out that someone you know really really believes in lizard people, and just accepting that as something that’s OK and normal. The fact that this cast is doing this hands off approach to Lance’s storyline is aggressively pissing me off. I hope LJ ran away, and moved somewhere where people love them for who they are.
Episode Grade: B-
4) So Help Me Todd (CBS/Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
It’s nice to see a first season show that really has found its groove. Sadly, it’s groove seems to pretty consistently be a B+ for me, but this show is leaning a bit too procedural for my general tastes.
Episode Grade: B+
3) Saturday Night Live (NBC/Peacock)
English Audio Description?: No
I had NO idea who this guy was. And, on my social before I watched the show, people were just blasting him. I actually thought this was one of the stronger episodes. The opening was funny, his monologue was self deprecating, and he worked really well in these bizarre but funny sketches. The writers really seemed to know how to cast him and use him in the sketches. One of the better episodes of the season, in my opinion.
Episode Grade: B+
2) Not Dead Yet (ABC/hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Aside from the fact that the show sounds like its being narrated by the youngest narrator ever, this is a decent sitcom entry. Honestly, if I’m being honest, it seems to be one of those shows though where the supporting cast is quirky and keeps the show floating, instead of where our lead is the reason to tune in. Granted, I’m only two episodes in, but the ensemble is killing it, while Gina Rodriguez watches them.
Episode Grade: B+
1) Dear Edward (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
I know this is Jason Katims, and I know he takes a while to get going. The past couple times, a streaming service has not let him make it to a second season. Last year, it was Amazon’s As We See It, and now I worry Dear Edward won’t reach whatever Jason has in store. There must be a reason Edward survived, and he’s the titular and lead character, even though Jason is investing a ton of time in the ensemble of family members who lost someone in the crash. It was the best thing I saw yesterday, but I’m still holding back on that top grade.
