The Too Much TV Roundup- 03/16/23

I did just make it through a “Save Our Shows” poll, the one conducted over at TVLine, which the networks don’t always follow. It hilariously reminded us that the top 3 shows from last years poll, all CW shows, got cancelled, while the bottom two shows, Welcome To Fletch and Grand Crew both got second seasons. And guess what? Those two shows are the lowest rated of the remaining bubble shows on their respective networks.

This year, the leading nominees aren’t really “bubble shows”, in the traditional sense. I’ve heard both Blue Bloods and SWAT, which are leading the poll, are in contract negotiations. SWAT has actually risen in the ratings, something hard to do for a show that’s been running as long as it has, and Blue Bloods remains one of CBS’s most watched shows. I’d be shocked if either of those got cancelled.

But at the bottom of the poll for the second year in a row are Grand Crew and Welcome To Flatch. Honestly, if those shows get a third season, their networks don’t get to complain about viewership anymore, or how streaming is messing with them. You’ve been told twice, resoundingly, that those shows should get the axe.

9) The Company You Keep (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

After seeing the aforementioned poll, I see that this is a mid-pack performer, and I’d be surprised if ABC stuck with it. Will Trent, which seems to never have audio description, is their highest rated contender, and they only have just so many spots. I’m also not really digging this show, even though i respect it for trying something new. It just doesn’t have an interesting dynamic to me, and I’m gonna drop it and move on to greener pastures.

Episode Grade: C

8) Mayor Of Kings Town (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I hope they pay Dianne Wiest a ton of money to put up with this crap. She did one thing in this episode. She called her son, asked if he’d be coming over for dinner. That was it. This woman is a treasure with two Oscar’s, and Taylor Sheridan can’t figure out what the fuck to do with her.

Episode Grade: C+

7) The Masked Singer (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

None of them are singers. I could tell that from their performances. none were really strong. it was a weak night, and I think Nick Cannon had the Sesame Street characters on there just so his budding reality show amount of kids could see him with that gang. It felt so weird for them to be there.

Episode Grade: B-

6) Night Court (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The prosecutor made me laugh a few times. But this show is struggling to be funny. This weeks scenario involved kids shadowing courtroom officials so they could show their activism eventually for another activist recently arrested for vandalizing a Christopher Columbus statue.

Final Grade: B-

5) Velma (HBO MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Part of me appreciates this shows willingness to go its own way. The other part rolls my eyes when there’s a “project Scooby”, or whatever nonsense they just tried to drop on us.

Episode Grade: B-

4) Star Trek: Picard (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

2nd episode of the season, and the bounty hunter really loves chewing her scenes doesn’t she? But that surprise ending… come on now. Didn’t we already kinda go there in season 1, just with a different character? Are we setting up a new Star Trek series? The Next Next Generation?

Episode Grade: B+

3) The Connors (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

That Jackie/Dan B-plot was so dumb, and the A plot was just Darlene and Becky fighting. I was disappointed by last weeks episode, and I’m very oddly disappointed by this weeks a little bit as well. It’s odd when JR Ferguson is the standout.

Episode Grade: B+

2) You (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: yes

I still think I know who the killer is, but I’m disappointed by this 4th episode because Penn Badgely made a pretty public statement about how there was no more sex, as he felt like it was romanticizing his character. And then… sex. What gives? Why lie about something like that?

Episode Grade: A- (Great episode, first time I think I’ve taken a grade away because of sex).

1) Alaska Daily (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: yes

Finally getting back into this show. That’s a really powerful way to bring everyone back after the break, and I wonder who got to take home the soapbox this episode was on? I mean, it was a good episode, but it very clearly had something to say.

Episode Grade: A-
