The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/27/23

Well, Disney Plus decided to ditch another show. So, Bob Iger complains that the Marvel shows are detracting from the films, but he seems intent on getting rid of the rest of the content. So what exactly will Disney Plus be making? Is he preparing for a Hulu merger where Disney Plus will be making The Handmaid’s Tale? Either way, Nautilus is now dead as a series.

9) Family Matters (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

In the beginning, Urkel is worked into plots in the weirdest way possible. I’m sure Carl was thinking why Urkel was there at the bowling alley, and where were his parents?

Episode Grade: B-

8) Trophy Wife (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

In part 1 of 2, we flashback to the wedding. It’s not as fun as you might think, but the dynamic is interesting between characters as where they were then to where they are now.

7) Hey Dude (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Ted is saving up for John Wayne’s saddle, and this causes some strife. The overacting bothered me a bit, but the plot came together ice enough for a series aimed at teens in the 80’s.

Episode Grade: B-

6) SuperPowered: The DC Story (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

While it is interesting to know more about the ins and outs of the early days of DC, this just seems a little self congratulatory. Earlier this year, I reviewed the Stan Lee documentary on Disney plus, and this feels adjacent to that, just in longer form.

Episode Grade: B

5) Billions (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

So, I am back 1 season, because i actually stopped watching this once I realized this show needed Axe. However, he returns for the final season, so rather than skip a season and perhaps not have any idea what happened to the cast in the meantime, I’m watching this damn season with Corey Stoll. Luckily, the original Billions cast, Paul Giamatti, Maggie Siff, Asia Kate Dillon, and David Constable are all magnetic still. And, when they add Corey Stoll, they add audio description.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Heels (Starz)

English audio Description?: No

Status: Not Yet Renewed

A wrestling drama with no audio description. The only reason I enjoyed this at all was that it took a step back and showed what happened after Jack and Ace’s dad killed himself, to bring more context to these characters. I actually like this show, and I wish it had audio description. Sadly, I feel like future episodes will have too much rasslin’ to score this high consistently.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Smash (Roku)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Norbert Leo Butz guests, but the true star of this episode was Brian D’Arcy James, who finally puts everything together about how long his wife had been seeing michael, to explosive results. What a terrific scene. Messing doesn’t even feel like she can keep up with him in that moment. James is a master of the craft, but rarely recognized for being so.

Episode Grade: B+

2) Breeders (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: YES!

Status: Final Season

One of the best shows you are not watching is ending. And it finally has audio description. in the 4th and final season, we start by continuing to see our core marriage devolve, all before Luke changes the trajectory of the season with his announcement. Who is the Breeder now? I would have given this a full A, but there are TOO MANY damn time jumps in this. It’s a bit overdone. Even for a super fan like me.

1) Strange Planet (Apple Plus)

Is Your Required Specific Accessibility Need Provided? Yes

Has This entertainment program Procured Additional Episodes In Which To Make You Laugh?: Unknown

If you thought my intro was weird, you haven’t watched this show yet. I ahve to say, I’m not even sure I like the show, or how long I’ll watch it. But what I am sure of, is that thee is nothing like it on TV. Nothing. Not one damn show. The writing on this show is so specific, and out there, that I applaud the writers room for just getting this script out. The show takes a look at the way our world works, but does it with the guise that we are not on our planet, just one like ours. And instead of anyone having names, they all seem to be defined by a characteristic, trait, item of clothing, or emotion. I would encourage anyone with an Apple Plus subscription, whether you like it or not, to watch at least one episode if for no other reason than originality. It reminds me of what Mel Brooks was trying to achieve back in the day, but on some very different level. It’s not just a straight parody, but almost a total deconstruction of everything we know. I can’t say I laughed my ass off or anything like that, but I did feel like for this one first episode that I had seen something I had *NEVER* seen before. And I rarely ever get to say that.
