First off, I want to give a big shoutout to Scott Blanks, another movie lover and audio description advocate who just dropped his first review on my site for Birth/Rebirth. Make sure to check that out.
9) Billy The Kid (MGM Plus)
English Audio Description?: No
Status: Season 2 Just Started
I wanted to start this show and give it a shot, but sadly, this story based on the titular outlaw is really hard to follow without audio description. I tried, and failed. The sad thing is, where The Winter King just left me cold, there’s a part of me that really wants to watch this because of the story being told, but it’s so hard to follow. Maybe one day Amazon will spring for audio description for their MGM Plus shows, but in the meantime…
Final Grade: Unwatchable
8) John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Leave me Alone
Luckily, people seem to agree with me, as this has a low IMDB score. but I hated this. It’s a bit of “real story” mixed with reenactments. Never start with a Ouija story, since that’s a board game you can pick up at Toys R Us. Unsolved Mysteries is the best comp here, and that show goes out of its way to interview as many people as possible to get you to believe their narrative. Here, we have a guy with a story. I didn’t even finish the first episode. I hated this.
Episode Grade: D-
7) 7) Step By Step (FreeVee)
English Audio Description?: No
Status: Ended
I may not continue with this on FreeVee, as it jumped from episode 2 to 5. I’m fine with the services that don’t have full runs of shows, but at least give me the full season of what you do have. Here, JT doesn’t want to work construction, and has a falling out with his dad. I saw this on MAX, and I may flip over to MAX for future episodes, depending on how many are actually missing.
Episode Grade: C+
6) Clarissa Explains it All (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: No
Status: Ended
Clarissa is an understudy in a play, which for some reason makes everyone around her insufferable.
Episode Grade: C+
5) Family Matters (MAX)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Ended
On The Urkel Show, Urkel takes the rap for Eddie, who accidentally crashes a car into the house. He’s such a good friend. He’s also clearly the star of this series, despite not being a part of the family. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to be a cast member on this show.
Episode Grade: B-
4) Futurama (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: No
Status: Unknown
Still stuck back in season 3, the gang crash lands on an all-female planet that kills the men that land there. So, time for Leela to save Fry and the gang again.
Episode Grade: B
3) The Other Black Girl (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Unknown
It’s hard to say how I feel about this show, since after one episode, I’m not even sure what genre this is. I could see this going the horror route, but it might also be satire. It’s walking a very weird line. Some of the social commentary is even blurry after only one episode. I’ll have to see another just to figure out what this show is even trying to do.
Episode Grade: B
2) Sex Education (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Final Season
I finally have started the final season of this show, and I was honestly underwhelmed by the season premiere a bit. It felt like now that everyone has had a sexual awakening, they don’t have much to say. The most said came in the form of Otis finding out that there’s a girl who does what he does, but perhaps does it better, and has quite a following on social media.
Episode Grade: B+
1) The Supermodels (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Limited
I’m going to give them a pass on the first episode, since this all starts at the beginning for these four world famous supermodels. However, if this series refuses to take a hard look at any of them, and turns out to be fluff, I’ll be disappointed. There are no major revelations in the first episode, but it is structured and balanced well between the four women, and I did learn more about how all of them got started.
