Really, it’s the doldrums of TV news right now. Even in the world of movie news, the best I got is that I just learned there was a movie in theatres called Anyone But You that stars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. Talk about the wrong time of year to open a film like that. Wow. Getting clobbered by films with big budgets and Oscar fare, with two people who really aren’t marketable romcom stars.
1) Everything Now (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Not Yet Renewed
Clashes begin in the friend zone when people seem at odds with each other over things happening behind each other’s backs. There was also a substantial talk about anal, and the series tried to still get real about recovering from having being treated for an eating disorder.
Episode Grade: B
2) Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Will Probably Be Renewed
This narration team is really against describing people. Luke is defined as having a scar, and that’s it. As we meet other people within the camp, their descriptions are really non-existent. I’ve seen Jason Mantazoukas, and he has a very specific look, but you wouldn’t know that from this description of his character. Underwhelming audio description, and the TV show is just following the story we already know, from the book, movie, and musical. Although, this Luke has a richer backstory, and is more believable as a good guy.
Episode Grade: B+
3) Reacher (Amazon)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Renewed
I gotta say, this is really one of my favorite shows. I love how Reacher and his team analyze situations, and to see him matched with three others who have useful skill sets really steps up the second season. He is surrounded by people who can take care of themselves. I’m hoping one of them isn’t secretly the bad guy.
Episode Grade: A
4) Wolf Like Me (Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Unknown
Well, at least now the sister in law believes him. This episode answers the question of what will the child be when it is born, but doesn’t answer the question of how they evade the law. That’s for the next episode.
Episode Grade: A-
5) A Murder At The End Of The World (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Limited
I swear to God if Clive Owen is the killer, this series gets an F grade, and you can ignore all previous comments. I’m just assuming the hype around the show is because it’s not that obvious, but as Owen sweeps in to kinda stop Darby and her investigation, still insisting it was a suicide, you gotta wonder… and then someone else tragically also dies.
Episode Grade: A-
6) The Crown (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Final Season
This show really does not make the Royals look good. Sure, the post-car crash episode gave Dominic West a moment to show us that Charles was deeply impacted by this, but Elizabeth could not be more indifferent, and her husband even more so. The idea that they not fly Diana home properly even crossing his mind… but then I had to watch Dodi’s father lament all that was wrong with the world, when this was all largely his doing. He was the first person to try and capitalize on hiring paparazzi, and he was forcing Dodi to land Diana. Your remarks about your culture not being recognized properly just fell on deaf ears. They never made him a sympathetic character, and a last ditch attempt doesn’t work. There was no attrition on his part.
Episode Grade: B+
7) Bosch Legacy (FreeVee)
English Audio Description?: Not On FreeVee
Status: Renewed
Just a friendly reminder that Amazon’s singular FreeVee service doesn’t support AD. And, with the addition of ads to their paid Prime service coming soon, it does kinda make you wonder… what exactly am i paying for?
Episode Grade: unwatchable
8) Julia (MAX)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Status: Not Yet Renewed
The third episode still has Julia in Paris, and honestly spends a little bit more time in Paris than the previous two episodes. The problem this show has at least at the top of the season, is that it assumes we are tuning into Julia to learn about how her PBS station is doing without her. No, we want Julia. I want to see home as little as possible until she’s back. This third episode balanced it a bit better, and brought Bebe Neuwirth to Paris finally.
