Welcome back Jon Stewart, who has returned to The Daily Show once a week through at least the election. Also, Katy Perry is making this her last season of American Idol. Dear Producers, *PLEASE* get an alumni. It is so awkward that two of them have been on The Voice, but not American Idol. It’s time to bring home Kelly, Carrie, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Jordon Sparks, or any of the myriad of female artists whose career has been launched by this show. Honestly, I wish the whole panel was alumni.
And with that, I knocked out another episode of My Life With The Walter Boys (Netflix), which despite having too many characters, is a guilty pleasure. The audio description isn’t great, I have no real point of reference to what any of these characters look like, but it is fantastic. I would add to that, there was a character in this episode who said he might be moving to England, and I realized there are so many people in this show, not only did I not know who he was, I had no idea who he was confessing this to. How many regulars does this show have in Season 1? 20?
Sexy Beast (Paramount Plus) is an interesting thought, to try and bring back the gangster quality of Jonathan Glazer’s classic, but not every film works stretched out as a series. I’m not loving this, nor am I hating this. It does get noticed by having a violent death so far at the end of every episode. So that’s something. The audio description is better here, but with a show that centers around porn, be prepared for dodgy descriptions of what is happening. I did appreciate “she reaches for his penis”, and “he enters her” as examples of not shying away, but it also feels like they are walking that fine line.
Ted (Peacock) continues to have subpar audio description. The show isn’t structured well to allow great audio description as it is very dialogue heavy, but there are so many sight gags in every episode that I feel like we end up missing more than we should. Example, in this episode, there was a joke about Matty tossing his scar over his shoulder after saying something homophobic, but there was no description about him even wearing a scarf, let alone the toss, so we just had to wait for Ted to make his joke about it. Do better.
Death and Other Details (Hulu) is at that stage where the tricks start to come out, like do you really have the killer? I know they are trying so hard to make these characters interesting, but for four episodes now I’ve wished Mandy Patinkin would just get a weekly procedural like Monk, where he was the lead, instead of the rest of this cast in a season long journey. Patinkin is terrific here.
I don’t really mention non-audio described shows, but I have to say while I was browsing, I noticed that AMC Plus has the only season of Pan Am, which makes sense since it feels inspired by Mad Men, and stars Christina Rocco and Margot Robbie, two actresses who people will still watch. However, like everything else on AMC Plus (basically) it doesn’t have audio description, though a one season show cancelled years ago is lucky to just be available at all honestly. The weird thing… they start you on Episode 2. There is no pilot. I had never chosen this on the service before, and even when I went to look at the episodes, 1 isn’t listed. Just 2. What? You expect people to jump into a 1 season wonder some ten years after its cancellation without watching the pilot? Really?
