best Audio description: Breaking Bad, Runner Up: Duster

Best Performance: Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone), Runner Up: Keith David (Duster)

best Moment Of Audio Description: The Title Sequence (Duster), Runner Up: The Shootout At Greek sal’s (Duster)

Duster- i don’t think I’ve ever complimented the title sequence. Apple, take notes. There’s some cool action at the beginning with chasing cars that is the backdrop, so a nice little fun opening before things starts. However, unlike Apple, which always has to describe only images and never lists cast members in the opening to all of their shows, Duster manages to actually do both. you get the cool title sequence, and the cast. that’s how it should be. the season finale of duster went out on a high note, with at least a few definite character exits, and one possible one. here’s hoping Keith David returns for a second season, because he was really fun, and I’d miss having him around.

Murderbot- Murderbot tries to save his crew, even though he seems disinterested in doing so. Things don’t go as planned, and finally someone recognizes his favorite show, but at a very inopportune time. Hopefully Apple is sticking with this, because I like it. It has potential. I haven’t been the biggest fan of the audio description because the show is so deep into science fiction, it always feels like there’s stuff missing. We get very surface level description, enough to get us to understand the major structure of the show, but not enough to let the elements defining the genre of the series to shine.

Tires- Thomas Haden church made a second appearance, and I’m really hoping they just add him to the cast. he’d be a perfect addition. He is what the show needs, an old guy trying to be chill, who guides the younger guys through their lives. They did it effectively with Its Always Sunny, adding Danny Devito, and this could be that.

Adults- I know I put this episode above Breaking Bad, but it just was too funny. My favorite episode so far. Two of the guys were doing alcohol delivery, and ended up hanging out and playing Smash Bros with High School Sophomores, like it was just a normal thing. Then two other characters became convinced they killed their therapist, and had the world’s worst medium commune with the other side.

Lazarus- 13 episodes was a lot. this would make for a great movie, or even a live action film that topped off at 150 minutes tops. it just went on too long, and if there’s more to this story, and a second season, I can’t say I’d come back. the audio description was recorded at a lower quality, which bugged the hell out of me.

Ginny and Georgia- Finished Season 1… again. Scandal is afoot. A lot of this series doesn’t make sense, but they clearly wanted to end season 1 with as many cliffhangers as possible. everything is in disarray, and the future is uncertain. I’m sure the Season 2 premiere will fix all of that. XTrax did a nice job with the audio description. I haven’t heard them do anything new in a while, so if they dissolved, I wish they had stayed around instead of some lesser companies that seem to get work by offering cheap as hell bargain bin accessibility.

Peaky Blinders- Sam Neill is quite good in this. I’m still not a super fan. I know some people love this, and right now, i can just say I like it more than Mobland. I don’t know why that was the 2nd highest rated paramount Plus show, but it isn’t the 2nd best show on their service, or the 2nd best anything anyone in that cast or Guy Ritchie has done. not even close.

All Of Us Are Dead- The Korean teen zombie hit got late stage audio description. it is TTS. It is also DVW. it is written well, but sounds like a TTS track. this was a show that popped after Squid game, but not quite as big. it is part of my catch up list because I always wanted to see it, and I noticed it got audio description a few months back. They did order another season, which can’t be too far off.

King of the hill- still no audio description. Thanks to a shorter Season 1, I’m already into Season 2!

Breaking Bad- this episode was fine, but it did feel a little like treading water compared to the last two episodes. I know we can’t top ourselves every episode, but it made it easier to tip my hat to Adults. But I’m wondering why I never did this before. Breaking Bad is great.

Yellowstone- I finally am getting my Beth Dutton back. there’s this scene where Beth took Twitchy (or whatever her name is) to a fancy bar, where they get hit on by guys. She uses this experience to tear down the ego of wealthy men. reilly’s speech where she drags this one guy reminded me of the Beth I fell in love with, and have been missing for this whole final part of the show. we need this Beth Dutton if their spinoff is going to work.

  1. The choice with Apple TV+ AD to not read credits was actually not imposed by Apple but by Pixelogic Media because blind people can find credits on sites like IMDb, but there’s no other way to get descriptions of the images in the title sequence. That tidbit was mentioned in this podcast, which I shared with you a few weeks ago. https://podbay.fm/p/telling-stories-from-the-clubhouse-101

    1. Yes, but has Pixellogic really done every track for Apple? And, my point was how Duster manages to do both. the visuals and the credits. Some shows have special guest stars, which only appear in that one episode, and it would at least be nice to denote that. or, anthology shows where the cast is different with each episode.

      1. They do all the English AD except for foreign shows, which are described by Dubbing Brothers. Their present approach isn’t how they’ve always described opening titles for Apple.

Say Something!
