The Small Screen Diaries: 07/11/25

TV News: there’s been enough movement the past couple of days for me to recap some of the decisions. Netflix gave Virgin River an early Season 8 renewal, as Season 7 concludes filming. Apple also did the same for Slow Horses, which got a Season 7 renewal, even though Season 6 has yet to premiere. Apple also picked up the new Sci-Fi series MurderBot for a second season. ABC has gone straight to series on the Scrubs revival after Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke solidified deals to return to the series, which could land as early as mid season. In revival news, the reboot/remake of The office, titled The Paper, has been given a September premiere, and will drop 4 episodes, then release 2 a week until the end of the month. CBS has shuffled their lineup, pushing FBI spinoff CIA to mid season, and pulling Watson back into a fall berth. News wasn’t so kind at MAX, as the streamer axed Duster after just one season.

Foundation-A deeply interesting science fiction series that makes me feel inadequate and stupid. I feel like I have to always laser focus on this one in order to follow its complex plot, which isn’t just a straight science fiction action series, but rather frequently offers ideas, themes, and social constructs woven into the Foundation vs Empire battle that pushes this struggle for humanity to survive. It is not the most rewarding watch, but it has good acting, and is often surprisingly creative. We’ve seen the mind control thing done before, but for one character to have had that much control made for a scene that allowed the description to soar.

MurderBot- A fun finale that ends actually as if they weren’t getting renewed. It completes its story in a way that is somehow satisfying just in case, instead of resting on a huge cliffhanger. I’m glad MurderBot will get another adventure.

FUBAR- predictable. this episode was really predictable, in ways other episodes haven’t quite been.I was a little disappointed, but I did like the James Cameron joke, and hearing Arnold seem genuinely excited in character that someone knows James Cameron. He just wants Cameron to put him in Avatar and save his career.

Revival- the worst audio description track might have been a bit more active this week, but it still makes choices that I think better writers wouldn’t make. However, I didn’t have to wait another week for the audio description track to show up on peacock, so that’s something.

Mindhunter- The duo interview another killer, with a different perspective. My favorite moment was actually the car crash out of nowhere. It didn’t need to be there, but it provided for an interesting change of pace.

The Kardashians- The girls think their mom is amazing. No surprise. kris also apparently did a workout video back in 1991, before OJ made her husband famous. So she wants to get that level of pep in her step. I hate watch this. I now understand what that is. The audio description always tries, but truthfully, sometimes I really don’t know which sister is talking until I hear what they are talking about.

the Great North- No audio description, but Beef is trying to avoid a comet that comes once every however many years, because he thinks it is cursed. Others partake in the festivities.

Scrubs- JD has a new patient, who is a hospital board member, and his attending’s ex.

the Art Detectives- For Prime Day this year, i decided to see what the hell was on Acorn. 99 cents for two months isn’t bad, even without audio description. I saw a documentary about Alec Guinness that looked promising. but this is their new hit original, and it was boring. It was also hard to follow without audio description. I might be back, simply to make use of my Acorn subscription. I’ve previously tried other streamers like BET plus and BritBox by doing the same thing. I also picked up Starz, so I can at least watch the first episode of outlander: Blood of My Blood, which will release within the two month span of this deal.

Yellowstone- there’s something poetic about this ending, which actually has Jamie ending up in the same place he left others in previous seasons. I’ll try and keep that ambiguous, in case you still haven’t finished. But, you’ll catch it. I liked the performances here, which gave me hope that a Beth and Rip spinoff could work. At filming, they clearly didn’t know Casey was also getting a spinoff, because where they leave his character is not where he’ll be in his spinoff. It was long, but it said goodbye to everyone, and Sheridan roped all of the main cast into the opening credits, so more cast members were listed than usual. RIP Yellowstone. I don’t think for a second they won’t keep mining the hell out of the Dutton family, the same way we do with other franchises like The Walking Dead or apparently The Big Bang Theory, which is getting another spinoff.

Say Something!
