The Small Screen Diaries: 08/22/25

TV Shows Watched: Peacemaker: S2E1 (HBo MAX) with audio description, Sausage Party Foodtopia: S2E2 (Amazon) with audio description, Long Story Short: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Dexter: S5E12 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Invasion: S1E? (Apple plus) with audio description, Match Game: S6E6 (Hulu) with audio description, and who wants To Be A Millionaire: S4E6 (Hulu) with audio description

Peacemaker- Really excited this is back.I would recommend, based on what I just watched, if you have the time to rewatch or binge season 1, please do. Not only has it been a while, which Chris (John Cena) tries to catch us up on, but James Gunn is also going to gaslight us into believing certain things weren’t as they were, so his creation can live in the DCU without Zack Snyder’s influence. The audio description not only did an excellent job with the title sequence, but also there’s an orgy here that lets audiences know James Gunn isn’t afraid to go where The Boys go. Zoo Digital did some great work here. I’d love it if Zoo could make a bid for all the bullshit at Peacock being worked on by Diffuse, since I feel like I don’t hear them enough, and I’m tired of Diffuse.

Sausage Party Foodtopia- This description just doesn’t get a chance to breathe, so I look for the little things. I think, some of the details were fun, like the wild blueberries having sharp teeth, or the dead human foot hanging out of the car window, but also, I feel like more could be done with Barry crawling up his ass and controlling Jack. I bet the animators do some fun changes there, and we don’t really get that. We get the occasional stumble, but I’m pretty sure it is more than that.

Long Story Short- Perfect moment for this debut. With King Of The Hill feeling like real life situations coming back, this show (from the people who brought us Bojack Horseman) has that same flavor. the pilot is just a Jewish family preparing for a bar mitzvah, and the eldest son is bringing along his girlfriend. All the jokes are so organic. Even the way IDC and Liz Gutman choose to describe the show feels more like a regular sitcom than adult animation. It’s a very different vibe from the show I just talked about with anthropomorphic food.

Dexter- The end of Lumen’s arc? If that’s it, honestly, she grew on me. It seemed like over the years, even though I stopped at the end of Season 4, every Dexter fan that had a problem with the show it was always in the second half of the show… which I didn’t watch. A fair amount of people complained about Lumen. Julia Stiles did fine. At first, I saw the problems with her being a replacement for Rita, but her arc goes in a different direction.

Invasion- I know we just started a new season, and I’m still somewhere back in Season 1, wondering if trying to get to season 3 is worth it. I’m not sure. The show is kind of slow, and just not as interesting as some other like minded shows have been in the past.

Match Game- i figured out how the audio description can actually be useful, because it isn’t. Sometimes, an answer is written down, but never verbalized. Can we at least do that? Right now, what you’re being paid to do is a joke. If someone from the blind/low-vision community told me “I want to watch Match Game, but I’m having a hard time getting the audio description to turn on.” I would tell them not to worry, it doesn’t really do anything anyway. What someone who is watching Match Game would expect is not what gets described, and what is (like the title card), is so minimal.

Who Wants To Be a Millionaire- I had the same thought here. How about making sure we actually get these visual results from the lifelines? Consistently let us know what the 50/50 revealed, if Jimmy or the contestants don’t immediately reveal it. When they ask the audience, what are those poll results? Instead of cashing a paycheck, put yourself in the shoes of someone who actually religiously watches this show, and ask yourself what aspects are purely visual thatt you’d actually miss? Not the wardrobe choices, or even the lighting. A lot of people are playing along at home, and if you cut out these little details, it matters.

Say Something!
